Well I’ve seen the “cheapest” boards. I thought I would go the other way. This is a summer board for the Pleasure Point area. Small, flat waves and plenty of other surfers. I plan to build a high tech version of a longboard. I’m using 1 lb. EPS for the core.
The new part for me are these internal stringers. I routed a 1/4 inch slot in the deck and inserted a layer of 4 oz. and a layer of 1 inch carbon uni tape into the slot. It’s 3/8 deep and filled with 1/4" divinycell. I was trying for “love handles” on the inside, tapering out the stringer depth and running the glass and tape beyond the end of the slot. Everything got vaccumed down.
Definitely want to hear a ride report on how the board feels in the water,I.e. flex. Also about how much do you weigh? Always curious how much reinforcement is needed.
I’m about 200 lbs. I made a board with a similar layup and it was flexible, very turny. I thought it needed to be stiffer in the middle to be faster in trim. That’s why I did this. We’ll see how stiff the stringers make it. Reinforcement for strength is not needed here. This construction method is amazingly strong, no heel dents ever. You can hit it with a hammer as hard as you’d like and not see foam.
"You can hit it with a hammer as hard as you'd like and not see foam."
I own a few hammers…Can I try? I have a few friends in Santa Cruz with hammers. Are you ready? and I’m sure the Central Coast Guys don’t just drink 805. I have a few 805 friends with hammers… Nice looking board…
Fin box, vent plug, pin lines and gloss coat are done! I left it as a natural gloss because it came out so good (or I’m lazy). I usually tell myself I can do a “speed coat” later, yeah right.
I finally got it in a variety of waves and can give a report.
It is fast, paddles fast, rides fast, noserides fast. It doesn’t turn well at low speed due to the lack of rocker. It does stay high on the wave when up front and the soft rails keep it sucked down in the wave. I can catch small waves and ride them well as long as I keep the speed up. I did get it in head high plus and it was great as long as I got in early. The flat nose doesn’t do well on the late drop. But, when it gets a good amount of speed I can feel the internal stringers rebound out of the bottom turn and lauch the board down the wave. I had some great rides that made all the work worth it. I don’t think I’ve ridden it enough to break in the flex, we’ll see how things progress.
