SBC build - 6'8 single fin

my first couple photos are over in the original thread that started the idea of the challenge.

I cut my bottom rocker and concaves before I template and cut my outline but for the sake of the photos here goes…

My outline and bottom. Single to double that runs through V which starts about 18" up the tail.

Next I cleaned my deck and set the deck rocker. I know some don’t worry about deck rocker but I like mine on these fuller bodied boards to be a bit scooped out in the nose area to reduce weight.

Next I banded my rails. On down rails I like to start with a big deep band and fade/roll it into a slight deck dome.

Next I band my bottom and finish them off.

And what is a single fin without a beak?

Here is the finished product.

Now it’s time to glass…

I’ll keep this updated as I go.

if the american spring [  our autumn ]  'surfboard building challenge ’  thread yields plenty of photo threads of boards being built , like in the great days of swaylocks , mission accomplished and stoke return[ed] !

great stuff !

… I eagerly await what the finished board will feature [ tint ? spray ? pigment ? fabric inlay ?   home made fin ? ]

 cheers !

Hey Ben.

my hope is the same as your as far as the build threads go. Although it seems to be a slow start…

As for the glass job - inlay, pigment and an imagination. All standard materials but hopefully arranged in a way that hasn’t been done or at least not done much but I guess we’ll see haha

If time permits I will make a fin as well.

Looks to be about 80 Degrees in that shaping tent you have.

Good boards are always built by a sweaty shaper.

Outline looks fun.

Put some panel Vee in that single.

Makes 'em fall over on rail so good.

Been riding mine lots lately.

Keep it up!

Haha ya Barry it can get pretty toasty in there sometimes…

Here is some progress on the glass job.

Laminating the bottom with a clear over the inlay and color on the rails/the bottom with one piece off glass was a bit of a challenge. And the cut lap totally sucked haha slow and steady but tricky to follow.

Photos seem to mud the bottom a bit but the colors are more crisp in person

Nice,  love the bolt cut-laps. Did some of those a while back.

Like the flower fabric too.

Keep it up.

Nice stuff you might have time to do two boads
Have you got a fin in mind for this?

like most my small single fins I will probably start with a greenough 4a  (7.0 or 7.5). I have had some good results with it in the waves we tend to get here but am always trying new fins and switching them up.

I have also come to like the 7.0 yater classic template which im sure I will test out in it at some point.

I have also really wanted to build a board with Bills double single set up… someday haha

If time permits and the waves are lacking I will lay up a fin for this. It will be sporting a box though.

Anyone else have a go to template for small singles they really like?

The double single does look interesting. I’ve been surfing somthing similar to a 7in parrish fin good when you want to cover a bit of ground or a Robert August flex fin. slower and easyer to turn but doesnt want to release to adjust line.
.

Hi,

Nice build !

I like the arrow cutlap on the deck, too bad the swirl is not red… the board would have been sooooo damn fast with a red arrow desgin  !

How deep is the tail V ?

Z.

Haha everything red goes faster!

V is 3/16 at the deepest point. Fades a bit in the.back 6 inche. Concave fades to almost flat.

Great idea enclosing the tent within the garage.

You should go with your original idea and do a Bill T. single double fin setup.  This would be the perfect board for that.

Swied - if you search for garage set up cheap and clean I posted a thread about it and where to get all the stuff.

Also Bill - if you read this - any insight on turning this into one of your double single set ups? I Don’t mind PMs if you don’t want the info out I the open ( if your willing to share it)

Here is an update.

I kinda slacked on the photos a bit but I got the deck colored and everything all glassed and hotcoated.

Sunk my fin box (will do a drill thru leash loop)

Laid out my first pinline on the deck ( going to do a double) - still need to pin line the bottom

Put on my black diamond- also awaiting pinline

Just need to finish up the pinlines and other odds and ends, gloss and polish

Eh,

Love it!

post up those pinlines.

And polish job…

Otta be bitchen.

Aloha

and keep the stoke!

Got my second pinline on last night.

Now it’s the diamond and the bottom.
