i’ve noticed that after i band then screen my rails, i seem to get a “pinched” area where the rail curve (in section, from deck to tucked under edge) isn’t quite as smooth as i’d like. this pinch is most noticeable when i hold the board under one arm and have the rail in my hand. i normally correct it by knocking off the pinch with my sureform then re-screening. what do you guys do to create a nice, flowing rail? are there any secrets to using a more worn piece of screen as opposed to a brand new screen? thanks in advance… kirk

Use a small band of 150 grit and do one to two swipes. Once again. DOn’t knock down the pinch, you’ll change the planshape.

DOn’t knock down the pinch, > you’ll change the planshape. This is where a lot of novice shapers get into trouble. The job of the screen or sand paper drug around the rail is not to create the shape, but to clean up the heavier scratches from the work that went before it. The rail, before screening should be a version of the finished rail. If you make your rails like this, they will stay the same shape when done. The last foot or so I don’t wrap the screen around it but let it fade out to nothing. The rail is so thin here that the plan shape would be destroyed. I hope this helps some. http://www.JimtheGenius@aol.com
