sealing a pu blank

hey guys this is most likely a real simple question.

I have an old 7,7 bennett green blank  that was sitting around for some time that  has had some damage and yellowing on it, mainly the last 3inchs of tip broken off.

I re glued the tip on and shape the board ready for glass but before i glass i want to seal/paint the blank white (or maybe colored) to hide the light yellowing and damage.

I am planning ot mask of the stringer then lighty rolling  some water-based paint on the foam. Will this give me any trouble with the glass not bonding to the foam? I would guess not as people airbrush on the blanks, . I was thinking maybe using an all purpose water based house undercoat to seal the blank maybe thin out a little so not as thick.

i had no troubles with my EPS board but that was epoxy and i just wanted to be sure can do the same with pu

what your thoughs and what should i watch out for?

cheers antony

resin bonds to…

guess what ?

resin real good

real real real good.

if you use paint and it gets thick thin an dont dry too good?

failure to bond.that is spelled period.

poly bonds to poly  like polly wanna cracker good.

I choose to seal the blank with a mix of a little q-call and pigment- tint ,your choice.

then i hot coat  and sand well… like real well perfecting the surface

before laminating and get perfect opacity concealing  multitudes of sins. yep spell that period.

seen plenty of delaminated decks, that is spelled bubbled.

and no delams in sealed decks.

When I am coloring a clean blank I will laminate the bottom clear or tinted

then follow the deck side with the sealed method and often multi-colord

which cleans up the deck overlap handsomely.

weight being a factor you may wish to squeegee

the resin to a thin application…

…ambrose…

durable is good.

FLAT------Interior Acrylic ,  Interior contains less acrylic.  Do not use Eggshell/Satin or Semigloss.  Do not overthin.  You will probably get bleed under the tape at the stringer with a roller or brush.  Thinng causes bleeding under the tape.  Spray it with a cup gun and it won't bleed.  I use "Swiss Coffee" Glidden from Home Depot.   FLAT!

hey i was wondering could you put tinted resin over a sealed blank ( white paint) with good results. i am guessing its be done before. I may be wrong but i thought the color soaks into the foam and the cloth. would the tints be patchy over a painted blank? any ideas

i was thinking it could be a good board to do a resin swirl patch on

If I were for some unfathomable reason using an old yellowed blank to make a board, I'd mix up some white or grey pigment thick enough to make the lamination opaque and use that to glass it with.  But I suspect that the yellowing indicates chemical/structural changes in the blank that will shorten the boards life.  So unless Brewer or Diff shaped it, Id' just go get a new blank.  ymmv.

Thank you Ambrose, for that valuable information .Probably the best tip, and best kept secret I have picked up at Swaylocks. Just think, possibly no more delaminations. Mind boggling!!!
