searched archives already, need help painting band around board

Just finished shaping board #7, have colored previous boards with resin tints but would like to experiment painting directly onto the foam.  I’ve read the archives and feel like I’m good to go on the painting but I have one small problem.

How do you paint a nice clean band around the board? I tried measuring it out, tried using a piece of string, tried eye-balling it, and its still looks off.

Good luck!

Hi,

assuming you still have a template for the shape, I normally just lie the template back on the shaped blank and move it in 2 inches and down a little and then pencil around it. Even better if the template is flexible tape it down onto blank and follow the edge of the template line with the tape, no unsightly pencil line…

are you talking about a band or strip perpendicular to the stringer or around the perimeter?

I have already made the tool for rail lines.

Bud, I am talking about painting a nice clean line around the board that when done will be perpendicular to the stringer.  Like a belt.

thanks

competition stripe I believe it is called, break out the t-square. Make sure your stringer is actually straight with a string from nose to tail. mark off a line, mask it off. Does it look good? Not good like my beer goggles made that girl last weekend look, but sober does it look GOOD? If so paint away. Oh, make sure you don’t paint the stringer.

Thanks riderofwaves

I ended up finding a way to do it, pretty much just like you said.

I did however forget to tape the stringer, and that does not surprise me.
