Second blanks?

Hey everyone!

I'm brand new to shaping have only done a single board, a pine alaia, and have decided to move forward with foam. However I have looked into to getting a second blank so I wont kick myself as hard if I screw up, but I cant find anywhere to purchase one. I'm confidant in myself that I wont screw up and that I should get a normal blank and go for it except my wallet doesn't take confidence over expierience. My only other option seemes to be sandwhiching two sheets of xps together. I'm fine with this method and it would be inexpensive practice but I have a few concerns, do I need a stringer, how do I cover up a pink foam (before lam, between or lam and hotcoat/sand coat) and with what? Also I have read sooo many ideals on how to prevent delam on xps, does anyone who uses thiis material alot have a sure fire repetable proccess that works? Any and all suggestions/help are verry appreciated!

If you’re in Honolulu, you can try King Foam. I think he has some reasonable prices for PU blanks. What did you want to shape?

Haha I can only wish to one day be in honolulu bro, I'm in downey CA, For a first stab at shaping I'm looking to do a fish shape, I surf down at san'o so i wanted to try something a little more manulverable through the crowd of logs out there and a fish seems perfect with the speed and volume to still catch the same waves I would on the 10'0 I ride now. I'm open to any shape really Im just eager to get going on a small budget

I have a few stringered EPS beaded blanks, pound and a half density that you can have for $25.  Huntington Beach area, near the 405.   Several that are good for fish.  I will throw in some practice foam if you have power tools.

Go to FoamEZ in Westminster.  They had a bunch of seconds last time I went down there.

If I were you, I would start with a first quality blank, though.  My first board was shaped on a second but it rides great, and now I'm wondering if the strength is compromised somehow.

I got some 6.9R's

they work for fishes with the tail pulled in a bit

their old but still good nice and thick

pm me if interested

Im in yorba linda

Hey guys I really appreciate the offers realy, and may just take you up on them. Real quick though I have a question on the density, is this a float or strength measurment, or both? I went onto foam ez website and saw that they dont have to many and that they go quick when they do get them. Could you elaborate on what exactly what is wrong with them that they sell so cheap?

They may have different defects

air bubble, dents, chiped rail,,,

I got one with an air bubble on the bottom about 3/8" deep by 3/4" diameter

It planed out so it didnt effect the board once shaped

you just have to go and look and see if you can deal with the defect

The only thing not quality is the stringer, which is plywood.  (My better stringers were basswood and multi-ply poplar.)  The density is light, almost half the weight of PU foam.  Fairly good foam, Edro blown with an excellent glue up.  The decks have no dome, wich can be dfficult for a newby.  The fish rockers are a copy of the Clark 6-2 C.
