Second board start-to-finish - 5'8" "Pocket Pounder"

you know… that’s not a half-bad idea

Just finished the bottom lam - the batch went off a bit quicker than expected due to the fact that it was pigmented (thought it would retard it more than it did) but everything saturated fine… just had one or two spots that we didn’t get the excess off quick enough, so theres one or two thick spots that will need to be taken care of in the sanding coat.

Only other down-side is that the tape on the deck failed in one or two spots and some foam was stained past the cutlap… guess I’m doing a ridiculously thick pinline on the top!

It didn’t come out as opaque as I’d hoped and the teal stain in the purple mingled a bit more than I planned, but the end result actually looks better than I expected. Gonna finish it first thing in the morning, will post photos once it’s finally done.

I’m also considering putting some carbon patches over the FCS plugs to cover the footballs that are very visible under the lam… kinda bummed about that, but now I know that I shouldn’t do that step until I’m ready to glass

Some shots of the deck and bottom lam with the carbon patches - did this step a few days ago and just now finally got around to painting the pinlines tonight to tie it all together. I wanted a rough, hand-cut paper look to them so I let my lines wander a bit on purpose. The end result was pretty cool and ties in well with my logo. So far I’m stoked with this board - gonna do a gloss coat in the morning once the paint has set overnight. I’ll update after and hopefully have a ride report in the next few days!

What is the carbon on the deck for? Build threads are great looking forward to the ride report.

Just a couple patches whwre my hands go when I pop up to help avoid pressure dings since thats where I usually get them the nost. Also sank the leash plug in a carbon patch for strength

Hey so you work in a ding repair shop??  Or is it your shop??  Where's the shop??  North Lahaina??

Ya we’re at Maui Ding Repair (Formerly Lahaina Ding Repair/Hanneman Hawaii). It’s the one on Limahana right by Mauimikes Beach House. You should come check it out sometime man! I keep meaning to drop you a line to see if you wanna hook up and surf sometime, but I’m pretty much a slave to the shop between my own boards and customer boards, so I haven’t even been surfing more than like 4-5 times last month. Kind of a bummer but at the same time it’s good because I’m getting a ton of great knowledge, experience and (most importantly) money enough to scrape by doing something I enjoy. It sure beats retail.

Got tired of waiting for time to put the gloss coat on the board and decided to take the roughly-finished, sanded board out for a 'beta test" - I figured the rails would need to be a little sharper aside from adding the gloss coat for strength and asthetics, but honestly I’m stoked with the way it rode. The foil of the board makes it a complete speed machine - I have a bit more rocker in the rails than the stringer line due to the deep concave, so the board flys in every aspect. When dropping a steep wave and making a huge bottom turn the quad setup generates tons of speed, same when pumping and going rail-to-rail… the thing swims like a fish. Then, on a few waves I made my drop a little sharper and took the high line down the wave and actually generated so much more speed than I’m used to (without even pumping) that I accidentally did my first air today. Considering this is my personal board and not for a customer, I’m thinking I’ll just sand the rails a little more up to 1200 and call it done. I’ll try to upload some pics soon, as well as a full video of the process start-to-finish, including some footage of the test rides (when I get around to filming the actual surfing and editing it that is).

Finally talked a friend into working the camera while I get a few rides… unfortunately this was the only good shot he got. Next time we’ll try video. Here’s a still of the pocket pounder in action

wrong thread…
