Ok let’s start… two months ago i got my first job. i work for a seismic acquisition company and my work forces me to be sitting 15+ hours every day analyzing seismic data. the job schedule is: 20 days to work, 10 days to rest. the problem is i have no time to do any kind of exercise to keep in fit. i try to eat healthy but that’s not enough. what kind of exercise can i do in minimal time to keep myself ok? i want to go surfing in my 10 r&r days without suffering an infarct. thanks in advance. sedentary jack.
Find a lap pool. Swim 30 - 40 minutes 3 times a week. Push-ups, sit-ups, leg lifts, running in place, jump rope, pull-ups,set of dumb bells for the shoulders, leg lunges can all be done in a cubicle if thats the space you have. Mike
I’ll agree with Rooster, plus maybe a good rowing machine like a Concept II. Buddy of mine has a similar gig and a similar problem. Do lots of work, not exercise, on your days away too. That does wonders.
hope that’s of use

You may find this link interesting. www.combatconditioning.com Although the marketing method can be a bit offputting, the exercises are good. Also try this for a pretty simple but tiring workout. Stand up straight, legs shoulder width apart, hands by your sides. Sqaut down and put your hands on the floor in between your knees. Shoot your legs backwards so you are supporting yourself on your hands, in the pushup position. Do a pushup. Jump your legs back to the squat position with hands between your knees. Jump up in the air as high as you can. Land in the start position, legs apart, hands by your sides. Repeat this as many times as possible. This exercise uses all the major muscle groups, gets you huffing and puffing in no time and can be done in about 10 mins.
PS: Don’t forget to warm up first.
J,
I spend most of my working day in front of a computer too, so I cycle to work. About 30 mins each way. Good exercise for surfing, doesn’t help you paddle but the leg strength is good for riding waves.
Actually, riding a bike to work ( I do it too) , especially if it’s 30 minutes or more, does a great deal of good. You not only develop your legs but also your cardiovascular system and even the upper body somewhat, helps your reflexes too. Kinda like the difference between free weights and Nautilus-like machines, the balance and corrections required help the whole body.

Here’s my moneys worth - Sit on an exersice ball, one bigg enough to put your hips above your knees when your feet are flat on the floor. Has done wonders for my back, not to mention all around balance. Good luck. Taylor
Take your skatey to work and roll around at lunch, it’s great for balance, while sitting at your desk keep it under your feet and you will find yourself always moving on it. Skateboards are the funnest way to keep your balance fine tuned for surfing.
I’ve been doing Tai Chi since rehabbing a knee reconstruction.
The 3 basic elements of Tai Chi:
Shifting weight from foot to foot
Twisting your waist
Deep breathing
Sound like useful stuff for surfing?
I have the same problem, i’m 10 to 12 hours a day in front of a computer and one and a half hour in my car. Halcyon told me about the Total Gym, i just bough one and i’m amazed!!! You can do lot’s of things, and it’s really helpful for being fit to surf.
I think that if you combine something like the Total Gym and Yoga or Tai Chi for balance and flexibility, the results would be really good!
Good waves (when you have the time)!
The Total Gym is excellent. you can simulate paddling almost exactly, and do a lot of other things on it too. It’s not too loud and also folds up pretty small.
Worth the money.
