Correction on Liddle selling unsanded boards. The boards were finish coated and the instructions were for “wet sanding” the finish coat with #320 wet/dry sandpaper
yea the boards under the trees were mine.
Finish the job, it sounds like your a hack, and your trying to make your problems someone else’s. Ironicallly, I am going to sand a board right now, a 5’6’’ glass-on thruster for my cousin’s kid. I am not stoked about having to go sand a board, but in less than an hour it will be done, and the look on his face when he gets the board will be priceless.
woah, and I thought i lived in a wave starved location. go for it man. your patience will be the first hurdle, then your return business will be the second. Make sure to make it easy to gather feedback from your customers. We just had decent surf today for the first time in a month. You should get something tomorrow and lasting a few days. Good luck.
thats so funny how different people enjoy different parts of the process. most everyone likes shaping…i really enjoy the rough shaping the most - laying the outline and cutting the foil and rocker and bottom contours and rough rail shape
laminating and hotcoating and glossing and polishing - not so into it but i LOVE sanding. something about tuning the final edges to make it smooth and deadly
i have ridden boards with unsanded hot hoats or gloss coats. I even rode one with no bottom hoat coat yet
just wetsanded and polished up a twin fin this morning and took it out for a ride - nothing better than that!
I agree grasshopper I prefer glassing , turning something that is so fragile into something that can last a lifetime , and then to show it all off under crystal clear glass . Others may dissagree but to me that is when it becomes art .
i know jacksonville would bea long drive but if you hada van and took a load down there I’m sure there are a few glasses that would help you for a price. Might even get someone to meet you 1/2 way. Just thinking out loud.
I had a factory with Bill Hixon early 70’s in Jax. I buy blanks and stuff from Surf Source. Would like to find someone to sand if possible. Going to send you a PM
Every time I look at this thread title my mind’s eye sees hot buttered surfboards
They were hotcoated, not finished with a gloss coat or any sort of finish. As I stated; each board came with a sheet of instruction on sanding. The sheet also stated that the board could be left as is; ie unsanded hotcoat. Did Liddle reccomend sanding to 320? I don’t remember the specifics. Think about it; “finished”. A finished board requires nothing other than a little Sex Wax. No sanding of the the hotcoat or the gloss. It’s been a while but that is my recollection. Liddle’s theory on this is pretty well known.
I think you may have a good idea, but you’ll need to find the right market. $585 for a 9’6" is pretty low cost, you should get buyers for that price.
If I knew a great builder (I think you fit that category) and I could get a lower cost board that just needed a little finish sanding, I’d go for it. Cost is always a great way to move product. Your not trying to under cut the market like selling cheap imported product, just trying to find a way to cut out a bit of the labor. The buyer gets a good deal for a bit of sweat equity.
Maybe you could have the people that made your glassing video extract the part about finishing the board and have that available for the buyers. Down side would be that someone could buy them, finish them up nice and sell them for a good profit. If you’re OK with that, no problem.
call it wholesale$
any retailer could get em
sanded and glossed with
an added shop lam.
or atleast a pen detail under the gloss.

I just sold a 6’2" quad. Clear/US Blanks/ FCS Fusion Boxes and leash plug for $500. A guy from Florida bought it and has made boards before.
He is on the way to Hatteras ( in a hurry…needed a board)and is gonna ride it hotcoated and finish later. The hotcoat was clean so we buzzed the rails with 150 and opened up the fin box slots.
He heard about it from a friend who lurks on Swaylocks.
Low profit but I have a paid for shop so rent is zero. I just do a few of these as a hobby so I doubt anyone is gonna bitch about cutting prices.
I’ve heard of several board builders that leave their personal boards unsanded, then sand em when they are ready to sell… supposedly they look almost new and bring a bit more $$ from a used board.
Tell your buddy heading to Hatteras to keep driving north to VB. I live in Hatteras and the swell hasn’t shown up yet, but I’ve seen pics from VB and Nags Head today and it looks way cleaner and more organized. They are forecasting 20 mph winds here until Wednesday, so we might get the short end of the stick again with this one. I remember the 90’s when a hurricane swell meant 5 days of surf before the storm hit and atleast 3 epic days after. Lately it seems it might be good for a tide change and that gets ruined by all the swell forecasting sights telling everyone where to be and when to be there. I miss the days of when you had “to go to know” and that feeling up sprinting up a sand dune to be surprised by what’s on the other side, “The Search”. Now there are cams, facebook, and instagram, where surfers snap pics of waves and share them with the world drawing an instant crowd. Anyone reading, I beg you to wait to post your wave pics until after your session, or better yet, the next day. Nobody likes a crowd and it’s always fun telling your buddies, “you should have been here yesterday!”
Stop surfers with smart phones!!!
Not to get off track, but just gotta say: “Amen.”
Haven’t surfed any of the cool stops in the Out Banks for years no need to with miles and mile of different sand bars building and shifting. Last time up that way in the early fall last year. Just me and two old friends that had not surfed with in 30 years. We workeda nice little peak with fun peeling lefts at low tide just down the beach a small fast short right worked untill the tide killed it. It’s like here in Florida. You have the name spots then you have few 100 miles of nice uncrowded peaks. I try not to be a Leming.
Oh and Cleanlines hope it all works out for you. I will be calling. Are you doing your boards in Poly or Epoxy?
Loehr won’t let me use epoxy so I stick with poly and acetone.
why sand it at all
they are supposed to be faster according to that aussie shaper Russell in a recent Surfer Mag article
easier to wax the deck too
what does pretty have to do with performance?
if its art
just hang it on the wall and never use it
just look at it and show it off
damn ugly rip sticks is my new brand
