Serious fin issue?

Howzit,

I’ve installed a set of fcs finplugs not realizing that the centerfinplugs went a little of center. So now i got a fin that sits there perfectly straight but has got a toe in of about 1/9’'. Will this strongly affect the performance or can I just get along with it? If not will it strongly compromise the tailstrength to replace the plugs?

Thanks

GeeF

Ride it see how it goes. Read an article that one of occy’s magic boards had the fins out of wack.

and Occy for a while there was also out of whack…but still ripped.

gotta love his surfing .

I remember , speaking of fins , reading that one of Tom Curren’s boards he ripped on in contests “back in the day” had THREE different sized fins.

Ride it, see how it goes. If you don’t like it, weigh up your options then.

One option may be to replace the FCS with another fin system / fin box for the effected fin (reading from yor post it is the centre fin so it will look a little wierd but not too wierd). Look into the dimensions, but I know both Probox and Lokbox installations will take foam out of the area of the FCS plugs so you won’t notice… Probox will fit your existing FCS fin also.

I had a single that was fractionally off whack, it felt better going one way than the other, can’t remember which, but it still went okay.

Go ride it, worry about it later.

Geef,

I would try it first. You may have discovered the secret to the greatest bottom turning board ever. Or one of the best snap boards ever. GL10 told me a story about a twisted blank that Brewer made into a twisted board that rode like magic. He said it was so twisted it was funny to see it rock when it was put on a rack. Who knows, maybe it was just twisted enough in the right direction that when under strain of bottom turn or whatever it was actually aligned perfectly. Also, Merrick makes asymmetrical boards as a model. I say go with it and learn from it. Nine times out of ten it’s mistakes that lead the way to advances. And if not you will at least have learned another valuable lesson: Check your alignment:-) Either way you can’t lose. I, for one, would be interested to hear about how it rides. Mark

Howzit geef, Ride it, if you don't like the way it rides FCS is probably the easiest system when it comes to replacing the plugs. I noticed a few years ago that my center jigs were a little off center due to warpage. So after putting in a set that was dead center I took every center jig I had and set them in the plugs and sanded the pointed tips so they were centered on the striger, now all my plugs come out right where they should be.Aloha,Kokua

Allright everybody, thanks for all that good input.

I’ll just give it a try, maybe it fits the board just perfect.

For now I’ve learned my lesson. Next time I’ll give myself more time to doublecheck the right setting.

Howzit,

After sleeping over and hoping my problems would vanish I’ve encountered a new set of problems. Now I’m thinking of ripping all plugs out and move them up a little. Now I’d like to know if that’s a good idea or not?

If at all, how is it possible to remove the already installed plugs fill the holes and move them about 1’’ up?

Most important: will the strength of the new set of plugs be compromised by the whole procedure?

What I thought I could do is:

Drill out the plugs, drilling the new holes, setting the plugs, filling the big hole with a milled fiber mix (or cabosil?), eventually putting a 4 oz cloth on top. This will probably result in a rather heavy tail. (Will the stringer be compromised by this procedure?)

Any input on how I could improve the method is strongly appreciated.

Thanks

Geef

don’t move the center plugs…that’s just begging for your board to break. if you want to move the side plugs, your method seems okay, but the tail will be a bit heavy. perhaps you could shape some foam cores from a few scrap pieces of foam and stuff them in the holes (and then glass over) to minimize weight? in the future, give some consideration to the ProBox fin system…it allows fore and aft movement of the fins within the box, and you can adjust the fin cant, too (and it’ll even take your FCS fins). i just got my first set and can’t wait to try 'em out.

Howzit!

That’s what I was afraid off…

The ProBox seems to be a good alternative. First thing that came up my mind was squeezing out an inch or so by replacing my plugs with that system.

Does that sound better?

I really need to do something about it! I couldn’t belive my eyes when I first saw how big I screwed up. I seriously managed to set the plugs (tip of centerfin) @ 2.24’'.

A little warning to ever other newbie like me:

I. Don’t set your plugs when your tired and you can not focus

II. If you do, don’t try to hustle!
