Hi all - I have a 5'10 x 3 fish template and I'm looking to shape into something very similar to the board Shane is riding here - seems to be very similar to the Channel Islands pod shape. (listed on site as 5'6 x 19.75 x 2 3/8) Decent views of the board at 26s and then again at 44-46s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgU8tnpj0Xk
I am shaping this board for specific conditions (mushy windswells we have here in New England and the rare smaller groundswells at the points which can be super fun - for the correct board) including: waist to stomach point break ground swell, wasit to head windswell mush at the points (alllleyoops anyone), powerful waist high east coast beach breaks and for the abundance of terribly mushy beachbreaks we have in NE up to head and bigger. I am an experienced surfer and know what I'm looking for in the board however I am a beginner shaper (4 boards). I am confident in my skills however have never shaped without a board on hand to match and template off of.
So, my question to you is what general specs should i work off of as far as middle with and width 1 foot from nose and tail. I am 6'1 170 and was thinking for overall specs something like 5'7 x 19.75 x 2.45. Full rails - slight double concave 1.5ft back and on and maybe even a slight V in the tail area to aid the quad setup? Not sure on the softness of rails outside of tail I'm thinking I should keep a slight hardness? How about width of swallow? If I do keep that little extra beef in the deck (almost 2.5) what should i taper down to in nose and tail? And last but not least - I'm obviously going to want to keep a flatter deck and lower rockers, but I'm not quite sure what I should be looking for as far as overall nose and tail rockers?
Thanks for any imput, suggestions, criticism - Ill be sure to update with any progress I make.
Here’s my thoughts… for your size, ability and surf conditions, in a Pod-like design:
5’8 x 15 1/2 x 20 x 14 7/8 x 2 1/2
Nose rocker: 4 1/4 to 4 1/2
Tail rocker: 2
Tips 5 inches apart
Quad set-up: rears 4 1/2 up from tips and 5 13/16 apart, 4 degrees cant and 1 1/2 off the nose; fronts 10 3/8 up from tips and 1 inch off the rail, 6 degrees cant and 3 off the nose
Bottom: double concave all the way, slight vee out the back to give a little more rail rocker in the tail
Rails: full with a soft tucked edge through the middle; soft and thin in the nose, hard edged and crisp in the back
Thanks… im getting excited for this shape I just hope it doesnt come out too Eggish - I’m going to experiment with cardboard templates until I draw up something I like. The only quad I’ve ever ridden is an old 80’s board 5’8 and 4 inches thick - was fun for what it is. Theres a beachbreak with racetracky rights - starts out kinda crumbly and then dumps perfect lines thereafter I have this board especially in mind for… Cant wai’t! We then just need the wrap swell it needs to work… or some sort of tropical activity!
Hey filth;
I really like nj’s advice here, and he gave you everything you need
to know to make a great pod type board. That being said, there are
a few things I would do differently for the waves I ride here in Cali.
I would do a single concave instead of a double. I tend to like drive
under my front foot & with the single, I would run a harder edge (tucked)
up to the middle of the board. (Same size as nj’s recommendation) It will
help doing cutbacks a’la Shane and maintain speed. I also
find that a seven degree cant works for my quads, but that’s pickin’ gnats!
The only other thing I would recommend is that you look at outlines on
any of the free shaping software programs that are out there as it will save
you a bunch of time sketching. You can then print them out for your template.
Thanks, I will give the single concave thought… I mostyle ride a single-double in tail on a standard shortboard and have little experience with the double all the way but I can imagine well what it will do.
RCD I most def agree with keeping the rocker down, especially the entry rocker. How do you feel about keeping the general rocker outline you just layed out but with a bit of acceleration toward tips to reach or come close to the 2" and 4" mark, especially in the nose… I was thinking slightly less for the tail as well. Also what is the stretch setup?
surfteach… I like singles too. Good suggestion. I think the double will give more drive through turns, and the single will have a faster top end, down the line speed.
rcd… I thought about lowering the rocker, too. But I added some volume/length/width to his original numbers, so I suggested more rocker. Your rocker numbers sound good for your dims. I’d also suggest a touch of flip in the nose, bringing the entry rocker up a touch. But if the wave breaks the way he described - soft in the take-off - you won’t need it.
Soooo here we are nearly a year later… I finally have the board shaped out. It came out great, especially considering the shaping conditions - small tarped in area, bad lighting set-up and wobbly racks… anyhow, I’m all set to glass but have some questions before I begin.
I have installed future fin box holes and am ready to set the boxes. Anyone have a good system to measuring cant. I’d like to go 8 on the front and 4 on the back. But dont the future fins already have a pre set cant, so should I just not worry about it and set them level?
After setting the boxes I’m going to glass the bottom with one layer of 4oz, over hanging the rails by one inch?
Now, is there any sanding to the overlap before laminating the top? Im going glass the top with one layer of 6oz and a 4oz deck patch. Do I over hang both of these layers back over the rails and onto the bottom like I did when laming the bottom? And should I laminate both of them at the same time?
Also should I pre cut the glass before I lam the bottom so that its ready to go, Im worried about the cloth sticking to the turned rails when I lay it on the top after laming the bottom. Is that the normal process??
When laminating around the swallow tail, which isnt very deep only an inch and a half or 2, where should i make the cuts on the tail - one down the center and two at the points to avoid wrinkles??
Sorry for all the kooky questions I have never glassed a board and unfortunately have never seen any quality glassing videos. I just want to get it right as I only have one chance to nail it. I have read up on as much as possible and seen some decent you tube videos but thats about it. I do however have a ton of experience working with fiberglass and resin so I’m confident Ill get it right as long as I follow a correct process.
Oh and when doing the deck patch - assuming I should do both layers at the same time - which layer should go on top, the patch or the full covering 6oz layer?
