We have to see this from several perspectives. Firstly, Shape3D is a commercial product and the guys (Thomas and Emmanuel) make a living of it. Having a free Lite version as such is of great use for everybody not commercially involved in surfboard design and I have fought long and hard to get as much packed in this free version as "possible”. So, now we have a start and my emphasis was on an easy design tool that has powerful print functions. More on that later.
As Shape3D Pro has been for sale since several years, they did not want to commit to a “fully complete” free version. So we made kind of a compromise on what is important and what not. Please understand me right, this is the beginning and the louder you shout the sooner important things might be added.
But there is a way around this picture import problem as even Shape3D Lite supports the import of different file formats. Do your picture import in the free APS3000, Akushaper or SurfCad software and then import the file into Shape3D Lite for further enhancement and printing… am sure there is more coming and as said, let Thomas and Emmanuel know what you need.
In Shape 3D Lite you can print outline and profile in original size. This is great news as in the past, printing templates was not without problems. How to do it? Easy…
Create your design and then click on PLAN (button is in second row). Here you can choose between outline/profile and slices or a board data printout as well as some other stuff. To print full scale templates, click on the FULL SCALE button (top row) and go from there. It works very well with most printers including the ones that can print banner paper.
As mentioned before, this version of Shape3D Lite is the beginning. Let’s take it from here and I am confident that Thomas and Emmanuel will listen to your requests and improve the program bit by bit.
The Shaped3d v8 product looks good… But, form where I stand, there are a couple of limitations in the Lite version that are always going to leave a market for APS/Aku. Those being the image and print options, IMO.
Sure, there might be workarounds… But people generally can’t be bothered trying to work them out.
A pity, I think. Looks like a really, really good product otherwise.
