listening to half drunk grommets at 10pm telling me they want what slater rides but lighter.
This it problem of the entire industry and the big famous shapers have bought into it lock, stock, and barrel. It’s created a generation of whiners, not interested in actually learning to surf, but interested in the look of surf. Even if some of them learn to surf well because of natural talent, they will probably surf the same old way until they quit at 30, which is why the big board makers only have to keep them a short while and the Volcom guys can get the rest of their money with the overpriced hyper fashion cool look.
That made me chuckle, my children are perfect!,( i really do know that they aren’t, but hey they’re mine), thanks for sharing my feelings so happily…about children and surfboards… i actually remember a guy that bought a surfboard off the rack at Local Motion in about 1982 and hated it so bad he wanted to fight me!, that was a good one… i told the sales person , Mitch, he was a tall local kid that had worked for lightning bolt before that, anyway , i told Mitch to give the kid another board, and i’d make it all right aabout the money… i got the “hated” board and rode it awhile, thought it was ok, ( it was one of my babies!), but it helped me know that … o.k. we’re all different , and what i know is good,…isn’t good for everybody… so we keep trying to get into the head of the person that wants a board to try and find out what’s goin on…i usually tell the few customers that get custom boards from me that they won’t get real close to what they want until about the 3rd board that i make them…they tell me , or show me first, i take a stab at a board for them, then they have to come back and tell me that the board that i made for them feels like this or that and they want something else, then i can adjust what i did , that i know, to what they want…maybe nowadays the machines are better than that, but i feel like i’m still a kid getting away with not having a real job, ( like Billy somebody told me), i do still enjoy the business in not a real businesslike way i guess… God bless danny
The last thing we want is a dissatisfied customer. The first thing to look at is lack of communication with the customer. We don’t refuse to build surfboards that fit within the reasonable range of design, and this customer’s request was within that range. But somewhere that was lost in the translation.
This bulletin board or any bulletin board is not a place to discuss this. I sincerely want this customer to email me at: rich@harboursurfboards.com and tell me exactly what was said. We may need to re-structure exactly how we phrase what we say when offering alternative choices. I need to personally apologize to him and hope that I can mend our differences.
Hey Rick, No longer have my custom Rick Holt from South Coast which was pretty thick for a 6’3" back when I could still surf a board that short. Ran into your buddy Lance D. in O.B. He is also on the move and seeing tough times.
On point! Thanks Rich. I was going to post on that . . .
Just to let you know I’ve ridden a walden CD 8’ and I own a Harbour SR 7’6, the SR was a much better ride. I won’t go into details, but Harbour’s customer service is top notch. Tim and Rich makes excellent shapes.
Everyone that owns a harbour has said something positive about them.
That said, I could see how you want something specific and not get it. I got into surfshops and since most of my boards are future fins, I hate them trying to sell a board that I want that has FCS but I want it with futures so I can swap fins around.
Yo carl I’m a freshmen at UCSB and I’ll ask some of the surf team guys if they know anything about it, if anythings its being used as a beer pong table on DP. maybe its still around, if I see it I’ll let you know. oh and how long ago was tanner on the team?
