Shapers that can't surf

Before computer design and CNC cutting machines, all 3-D stuff was modeled by hand by skilled pattern makers.  Things like auto and aero interiors, etc were created from scratch out of wood, modeling clay and/or foam.  Tiny details were hand carved by skilled craftsmen who knew how to follow the blueprints. I’d bet that many of these same non-surfing craftsmen, given the plans, could outshape most modern surfboard shapers.

Designing, refining, customizing, glassing with color and finishing to perfection vs carving a foam blank to a pre determined shape. Two completely different things. Just sayin’.

Plus, even the skills of design and production could be mastered by non surfers, if they were guided by an understanding of surfboard dynamics and a skilled team of riders giving feedback.

There’s a reason the best surfers in the world aren’t generally also the best shapers and surfboard builders in the world: completely different skill sets and requirements. But most if not all the best shapers do surf, or did at one time.

Just seems like you’re the guy who can’t admit he was wrong.

There is no shortage of pictures of my work on this site.  I post the good and the bad.  There are even threads dedicated to my struggles with color work.  Try the search feature.

PS:  Feel free to post pictures of your first attempt at a resin tint.  You’ve seen mine.

If you go back to the original post, this thread is about shaping a board is it not?  Glassing, color and finishing to perfection are completely different things.  Any aspect of this process can be easily learned by someone with the skill sets to do it.  Its not rocket science.

No No No!!!  You have to be a pro for 30 years who’s still struggling with the basics of cutting out an outline and making rail bands.  You have to toil at it for decades.  Its absolutely impossible for someone to just be skilled with their hands.  Also if the sculpter tries to add color to the sculpture and his color work isn’t up to the standards of some internet douche that means that guy is a terrible sculpter and his opinions on sculpture mean nothing.  Only the opinions of the 30 year douche matter cause he’s 30 years douchier than everyone else.

A good friend owns the local fishing tackle shop.  He’s joked to me for years that his business is not about catching fish, its about catching fishermen.  There is also a saying that 5% of the fishermen catch 90% of the fish.  Same thing, different product.  At the end of the day its all bullshit.  We are talking about water toys here not lunar modules.

…we are talking about a profession, a labor; I live from this trying (like most in many labors) to do best work possible nobody is saying that is not possible to do it right at some point; you are attacking me saying douche, and many more things, also you are a rookie and weekend warrior too arrogant but think that can do better jobs than the masters. Then a cry baby putting - ratings and insecure deleting pictures.

Also saying that I cannot do my work right after 30 years; Im honest to say previously that I am not a master and that I know the steps that I m not so good yet.

Then put another picture and says that is no shortage of photos; SO post the original picture not this board; I saw the other photo with a colored board.

Over for me

If you disagreed with my post state your point and move on.  When you make it personal and make a lame attempt to criticise old boards in the background of a picture posted in another thread as a backhanded insult you crossed completely over to douche baggery.  Don’t think I’ve ever addressed you on a personal or negative manner.  Give respect, get respect…and you cpompletely lost mine.  Interesting to note that someone else said my post was “well said” while you go to insults.  Insecurity issues much?

“Any aspect of this process can be easily learned by someone with the skill sets to do it.”

I suspect that a skilled modeler/patternmaker makes a bit more than the average shaper or more of them would jump in on it.  I also suspect that like many other types of handcrafted endeavors, it can now all be done faster, cheaper, and more accurately with a computer program and CNC cutter.

Once one is free of the mind fuck of labels and marketing, a whole new world opens up.  Or, one can go with the crowd and… well, you know…

Some of the best shapers are good surfers. Some of the best surfers are good shapers.
