So I have shaped a couple of boards, but cant seem to find anything that weighs enough, and is small enough to hold my board in place on the racks, and allow for me to pass with my planer (currently using a bag of Ice Hockey pucks). I was wondering what the rest of you use to hold your board in place? Any feedback would be awesome!
I use a couple of bags (heavy canvas, sewn) of lead bird shot. It used to be somewhat cheap but now I think it goes for a dollar a pound. Bags are about 5-7 lbs. a piece. Most of the time it only takes one bag but on longer blanks I like two.
I would start with your racks. Are they level sturdy wide enough with a good grippy material. I like old wesuit material. My silent helper when I need it, gets in the way of one hand flip overs when you need a weight, is a 3lb barbell weight I found in an alley.
Use whatever you want for a weight, but know that the more weight the more the blank will distort and bend while shaping. So keep this in mind while shaping and place it thoughtfully.
What a bunch of cheapskates any body shaper that builds high end boards for the international surfing elite and the Euro rich knows that the only wight worth using are gold ingots.
now where did i put that diamond encrusted sanding block?
My blanks weigh less than any of you guys, and the only time I use weights is for trueing up the outline with planer. You're not supposed to push that hard on the planer, it won't cut more or better with pressure.
But..... To each his own. If you want to spend time placing, moving, and removing a weight, have at it...
