KM,

Search the archives…TONS of info in there, waaaay to broad of a question for anyone to answer…no one feels like typing a book. What ever your question…the answer is in the archives. Hint…look to the older posts for some real gems …oh yeah …have fun…

Kara,

Ouch! Your right. Being out of the water is way worse than the pain. Try John Carper’s shaping 101 video. That will get you started. Follow that with Damascus Productions shaping video with Jim Phillips. You should have a big pile of hand made boards when the knee is ready to surf. Good luck and have fun. mike

i think both videos is probably overkill. if you’re into shortboards, the JC video should be fine. if you’re into longboards / egg shapes, then DEFINITELY go with the Damascus videos.

Kara,

ACL replacement sucks (I had mine done two years ago), but I found shaping provided me with a stoke almost as huge as surfing. I took my recovery seriously (you don’t want to go through with this again), though I snuck in a few days on a boogie board when I got the jones. It’s a good time to shape as you can really take the time to get your boards right, and it helps with your therapy as you have something to work toward. I recommend planning a surf trip to coincide with the end of your recovery process…you deserve it!

If I was in your position I would consider a waveski, not to be confused with a kayak, a waveski is basically a sit down surfboard with a thruster setup, same moves everything and no pressure on the knees

make models 1/2 scale is cool you can get the idea w/out incuring the expense of materials on “first pancake throw outs”…ambrose…

I had my ACL & MCL replaced (once the broken femur healed) about 3 years ago. I was dry for a long time. But everything’s copacetic now, so do the rehab and it’ll come around. Push the rehab past the maximums - make it your goal to impress & amaze your Doc & PT. Put a bike training stand in your garage and a tv/vcr. I’d go out there every night after the kids were in bed & pedal for an hour & watch the news or surfing videos. Treated myself to a new custom Jim Phillips to prop in the corner as an ‘incentive’ board…

Good luck.
