Shapin' Tunes

Hey R.I., Your choices are right up my alley! But for the actual mowin of da foam I listen to VanHalen and VanHagar for the rough out and then blend into the Doors, AC/DC and Aerosmith. I finish up with the soundtrack from ‘Crossroads’. When glassing I switch to the soundtrack from ‘The Commitments’. The sanding is done to Coletrane and Miles Davis. Magoo Noodle and Rich, Just want to let you know that I am finishing up that 8’ egg for my brother and I used suggestions from both of ya’ll and I like what I’m ending up with. I will probably shape one for myself next. Thanks for your help. M

Nice! Hey, what’s your Deano fav ? I know the Dylan tune’s gotta be > “Serve somebody”. skip, i like any of dean’s ratpack era swinger stuff. “you belong to me” a fav by dylan. least favorite is “hurricane”, hate that one.

lately it’s been mainly tom waits. also some ray charles, buck owens, > marvin gaye, jimmy reed, elvis costello, rick nelson, chet atkins, > knophler, neil young, motown, king crimson. a little sinatra and dean > martin. Nice mix Gene. Check out “Wicked Grin” by John Hammond, all Waits’ songs and produced by Waits as well. Also - RL Burnside. The “Big Bad Love” soundtrack has RL doing Dylan’s “Everything’s Broken” and 2 new Waits songs. Thought I was the only Ricky Nelson fan…

I guess I should mention… that shape surfs better If you shape it to Texas singers/songwriters, like Townes VanZandt or Guy Clark. Out there in the Gulf the wind is blowin’ like a bandit I’m talkin’ ‘bout a hurricaine, and your riggin’ will not stand it…

What do you guys like to listen to while mowing foam? Any favorite albums > or songs to get those creative juices flowing? RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE,INCUBUS,‘EARLY’ JOHNNY WINTER,… IT’S ALL ABOUT ‘FUELING’ THE SPIRIT(Something that gets slightly drained on a daily basis by kooks, non-property tax paying ‘locals’, obnoxious surfboard factory workers, rush hour, foam dents, dull planer blades, lame longboard club parkinglot monkeys, minimum wage mall surfshop clerks(false elitists)…whew! I feel better now.

Well, if we’re getting this deep in the Texas stew…and depending on what you like…don’t forget Jerry Jeff Walker for a little wierd/fun energy, Jimmie Dale Gilmore for some cosmic country, and for the rockers and production guys try Joe Ely.

She ain’t from Texas, but she got here as fast as she could. “When Sue Foley arrived in Austin a couple of years ago, she wasn’t hard to spot. Gamine redheads toting paisley Telecasters are not exactly standard issue, even in towns as free-spirited as the Texas capital. In any event, Foley wasn’t a Texan, not by a long shot. Her home lay in Ottowa, but her heart belonged to the mythical landscape inhabited by the likes of blues masters like Jimmy Reed, Muddy Waters, and James Cotton. It was they whom she burned to emulate when she began sneaking onto blues club stages at the tender age of sixteen. She had her union card before she qualified for a driver’s license. By the time she turned 18 – not yet old enough to buy beer in some Texas counties – she had already lit out for Vancouver and cobbled together a band. She displayed an adult perspective when she told a reporter, “Women grow up faster than men, and it shows in the way they play guitar.” But she displayed a dash of youthful vigor when she added, “I’m going to play as good as a man, and I ain’t gonna be no rhythm player.” It is that attitude, and the chops to back it up, that have won Foley such respect and admiration from listeners and critics. (“After one performance,” said Billboard, “she left the audience flabbergasted.”) They look at the figure in the footlights and see a star waiting to happen: she looks in the mirror and sees setting off on a lifelong quest. In one of those peculiar juxtapositions of perception and reality, both parties are, for once, correct.” see www.lonestarmusic.com Tom>>> SK->>> From deep in the heart- of Texas that is.
