What are some good techniques for creating boxy rails on a 6’5" single fin egg. Thanks
I’m sure there’s more out there in the archives, but I just typed in “boxy rails” and this was the very virst thread I came upon. The end of the second post looks like what you’re looking for. http://www.swaylocks.com/cgi-bin/discussion/archive.cgi/read/16292
The 6’9"A Looks like a good blank for what you want to do. Clark calls it the the swiss army knife. My suggestion for the boxy rails; after cutting out your planeshape and truing it up. Do all of your bottom work without touching the deck, once you’ve got it to about 1/8" from desired thickness, skin your deck from the center (stringer). In order to get a good boxy rail it is easiest to have the deck as flat as possible and this blank should allow that once your planeshape is cut. After you have skinned the deck and put your foil in. do your rail bands or band last and make shallow cuts. one shallow railband should give a good boxy rail, from this point you can widdle your rail down to your liking of boxiness with dragon skin or screen. I am still learning so i may be off track but this works for me. Maybe we can get a chirp from one of the experts. Aloha 808 shapes http://home.hawaii.rr.com/makani808shapes/
i’m not the expert, but my technique for boxier rails is to get my rails down to thickness i want then i cut my bottom rail in and just like 808 says, take some dragon skin and blend the deck into the rail. a piece of foam rubber mounted on a block with some 50 grit will blend rails nicely as well. then just screen 'em smooth.
