Hey guys as you can tell I’m new here, so I’ll tell u abit about myself for starters. Im 18 and live in Belfast Northern Ireland, I love the sport of surfing and eveything about it but I have never actually been in the water surfing yet which might sound really stupid but I live a good bit away from the nearest surf spot and transport is a huge factor for me but the good news is that I booked my first lesson for May and Im really stoked about it.
Now to my question or questions, Is there anywhere in Ireland that does Shaping Courses?
Is it worth learning to shape ur own boards?
Is it better to do shaping as a hobbie or as a career?
How much does it cost to get started?
How do you start, is it just a blank piece of Board and how much they cost?
Thanks for any answers guys, James
i am glad that you are stoked on surfing. i would love to travel to ireland and go surfing you get some pretty awesome waves in that region.
as for begining shaping. as i know of their are no shaping courses. but i do know that they are a few shpaers on swaylocks who are from ireland and they would probably help you out. either then that you might want to check out the shaping 101 series of dvd’s.
shaping your own boards is defiently worth it, chances are you can build them much cheaper and the feeling you get from riding your own board is undescribable.
as for the cost of starting you can go from under a 100 bucks to a couple thousand. all you really need to get started is a sureform some sand paper and a lot of elbow grease. a blank of foam will run you about 50 to 100 dollars. now these prices are in american dollars so you might see higher or lower prices.
check out foamez.com for some of the stuff you need to get started.
Hey Dude! Aren’t you putting the carriage ahead of the horses? Try surfing at first, then, after become aware of all the stuff involved in it, just then, start to think about shaping your board. As an advice, meanwhile, start getting all th info available in books, magazines, videos, internet, etc, about surfing, oceanography, hydro and aerodynamics, weather, nature (physics, chemistry, biology), or, in other words, everything related to the real history of surfing on Earth. Good luck in your journey,
Jeff
