Shaping demo by, Cort Gion, in Portland Oregon tomorrow, Thursday, at Gorge performance

Cort Gion Shaping Clinic: Thursday, April 28th at 7:30 here at the GP shaping shed. Watch Cort shape a fish right before your eyes. Come with questions, he’ll have answers. This a great opportuninty to watch a master at work.

I’d love to go, but gotta work tomorrow.

Actually haven’t seen Cort since 1970!

I have 3 of his boards in Kahala Oahu.

I think he had just started shaping then, while I was in the mid 50’s.

The last single fin I ever owned before the thruster epidemic was a Gion. It came from Hawaii, I think. Bought it from a friend. Wish I still had it. Damn good board. Wish I could watch. Mike

Cort lived in the house fronting my favorite break on the north shore (it was also used in the movie “North Shore” as the house guru shaper Chandler lived in). He was cool enough to let me watch him shape a couple of boards when I first started. I heard he also helped out a few other shapers, Brian Bulkley for one, when they started out. I could never figure out why he moved to Oregon but I hope he’s doing well. Aloha Cort.

Thought I’d bump it once incase anyone around the PDX “kingdom” didn’t catch it. Good to hear great stuff about him. I heard he moved to the mid-south coast 'cuz it’s so nice, uncrowded, and he loves to hunt. If I go I’ll ask him. Taylor

Anyone who has been there can see why living there is a possibility.

A return to the old daze, with the pluses of new technology.

I wonder exactly where thos. A few years back, like 10, I was windsurfing Pistol River area and rumors of an old shaping and glassing factory abounded. I drove around, checking the E side of the Coastal Highway, and found some big garages and possible warehouses, but no one was around.

I wonder…

Hey Lee - I heard he live near Florence - a bit north of pistol river. The person I spoke to said his big inerest, besides a good place to raise is kids (ala Lopez in Bend)was to hunt Elk. Plenty big herds in those parts. Do you know if he sails too? Lots’ o wind up here as you know.

Taylor

Thanks…

I don’t know if he windsurfs, but between the Cape, FaceRock, Florence, Floras, and Gold Beach, there are more and better surfsailing spots than anywhere else in the world.

The spot I checked was inland of the coast highway, above the CH, and just N of Pistol area. There was reputed to be a shop selling old, junky windsurfing gear, and near it, along the same stretch of one lane road, the surfboard building shop.

We did see old 55 gal barrels, but they were behind a barbed fence.

I’m not any kind of hunter, but bro has a .338 Winchester Mag, 300 Weatherby, and several .270’s laying around.

Cort seems to be doing well and is VERY busy… I have never heard him mention windsurfing.

I tried to make it down to Portland to watch him shape and pick up my board, but my schedule wouldn’t allow it. Had to do a third party pass-off, so I’ll be down in the PDX area SOON!

His website is up again, but needs work.
