How's it going? I am in the process of shaping my first board (retro fish). Last night i started on the rail banding and on one side of the board, i made sort of a dip in the deck. i'm using a bosch planer, and the knob on it is kind of hard to turn for depth adjustment. I was wondering if there is any way i can correct the dip in the deck. Take the depth of the whole board down and redo the rails? i feel like i have already gone below the harder outer shell of the foam. Anyway, any comments or advice would be very helpful.
Thanks,
Joe
Hey Joe how deep is the dip, any pics? I've done it a few times before and would try to even the dip when screening the rails and bringing them up onto the deck. When you go over that spot take some pressure off the screen/block or whatever you're sanding with. Try to use long strokes so you take down the high spots and glide over the low ones. Probably not the best method but you can get it to blend in somewhat with the rest of the rail/deck. You're rail profile may be a bit more bladed or pinched than what you have in mind though.
I'd leave the thickness alone for now until you try to blend the dip in a little to see what you're dealing with. No matter how bad it is water is still going to flow around it.
Thanks for the feed back man. I'll give it a shot. I'll post tomorrow how it turns out. Here's a picture. If you see a different way to address the issue after seeing the pic, please let me know.
Thanks,
Joe
yup, that’s “sort of a dip” all right. Better try to level that out.
Yea, i got it leveled out. Spent a lot of time sanding with 60 grit. I got it looking pretty good, the only problem is it took a lot out of the tail, and the depth. i was hoping to not have to sacrifice the depth, but with all the sanding, i brought it down to a little under 2-1/2". Here are a couple of pics. I was thinking of cutting a couple of inches off the tail. Still gonna glass it to get in the practice. Trial and error. I have really been enjoying it. Let me know what you think.
Again, I appreciate your feedback.
Joe
Joe, 2.5 inches is still very thick for the tail of a fish. taper the heck out of the last foot, then cut out the butt crack and finish off the tails, don’t hack off the back of the board.
