Shaping for GROMS - Thinking outside the box.

I have this little guy that I have been making boards since he was a even smaller guy.

When I first made his boards they were like 5’6" x 18 1/4" x 2"

Three years latter I’m shaping him 4’9" x 17 1/4" x 1 7/8"

I won’t bore you with the in between boards to get to this point.

However it’s interesting were we ended up.

Quinn is the one who wanted be to go down to 4’9" and foil out his rails and keep it under 2".

His Dad was wanting to go thicker, wider, longer.

The son was smart enough to identify his need to duck dive properly.

As a kid develops skills his requirements for a High Performance Shortboard are relative to his size and Ability.

3 years surfing (Kids learn 5x faster than older surfers).

From a Design Perspective I am happy to work with Quinn to get to this point and follow his progress.

Kind regards,

surfding

Wrong Picture on original post sorry here what I meant:

Those dims seem crazy at first glance but It’s all relative.  Does the kid seem able to pick out design characteristics that he likes or doesn’t like or are you just shaping him pretty much just downsized proven shapes?

It’s a downsized proven shape however I adjust the rocker and rails.

When you size them down they get a little squaty.

I just let it happen.

The kids love them that way.

Hi,

Ive got a 6' 3"  X 18" shaped blank that was kindly given to me by a local shaper.

Its been sitting in my loft for the last few months while I figure out what to do with it. Its too small for me so ive decided to make a board for my son. Hes only 3 1/2 but I might as well start it now as I usaully take a few years to finish things I start!!!

I have looked at the dimensions above and will go for something similar.

My only question is : will I need to adjust the fin sizes as the will be quite large for the size of the board? I was thinking of grinding down a set of glass-ons?

Ps, out of interest how old is the little guy?

Any thoughts?

Cheers Jack

Jack09:

I cut all my fin sets down.

Good call.

PM if you need plans or details.

Kind regards,

surfding

Quinn is 8 years old and 65 pounds started surfing pretty good at 5 now at 8 he rips! His Dad starting him surfing before he was 5. I didn’t start making his boards until he was 5.

My son who was on the ASP World Tour started at 4. Don’t take you kidout in macking surf at the begining. Low tide small waves to start. They progress fast with encouragement.

Surfding,

Thanks for the advice. In the local surf shops to me theyre selling kids foam boards dirt cheap so may get one for the time being.

I dont know if its a good or bad thing but my boy is fearless(suppose its good if I can harness his enthusiasm!) I took him down my local beach last summer and was pulling him around on a body board in the shallows. My wife was looking on and said she knew exactly what I was doing in 'training him up' early. couldnt argue.

Will PM you for plans, cheers

Hey ding whats the rocker like on a board that short?

Don’t get hung up on tip numbers. Think about curve.

Maybe I should just post a PDF?

Don’t let my rocker numbers mess you up. I work from the Y Axis Starting point at Zero for both Nose and tail.

Curve is the key. You can always rock the curve line to make sense for the way you look at rocker.

Howzit surfding, That is a shot of Jesse I have never seen before and I watched him grow up on the North Shore of Kauai and judged him in so many contests I can't even begin to count. Last time I saw him he was picking up his board that he had broke the fin off and had brought it to me to fix. He knew I would put the rush on it and had it done in half a day and he was so stoked. He had moved to Oahu by then to make his mark at Pipe and he did good at doing just that. He was in the same age group as Andy and Bruce Irons, Sion Milosky, Roy Powers, and so many other super hot surfers that most moved to Oahu to show the Oahu boys that the Kauai guys were as hot as anybody else. Thanks for the cture and I am going to save it. Aloha,Kokua

Hi Kokua:

Jesse-Merle Jones and Roy Powers are both good friends of my son Shaun.

Merle as we called him would come over to our house in HB while on the mainland.

He recently moved back to Kauai with his girl friend. (he spent some time in Costa Mesa)

I’m not sure but I think he still has his spot at PIPE.

I have seen him just light up OFF the WALL. (He charges!)

When Shaun was on Tour I loved watching the Triple Crown from the Beach and the kids calling me PAPA Wardo.

I made Jesse a couple of boards. I think Timmy Patterson made him a few and Wayne Tokorro makes his Hawaii Boards.

Roy Powers is another Talent. I never met him personally however my son only has good things to say about him.

Pretty Cool you lived in the middle of the Talent Pool that came from Kauai!

Kind regards,
