Shaping/glassing bay dimensions

Guys,

looking at relocating in a few months and will have the opportunity to set up a new shaping and sanding shed.

im in Australia, and am looking at the steel kit sheds that come prefabricated.

size variations are huge, been wondering which way I should head…obviously would just love to go huuuuuge and have plenty of room, but of course budgets, backyard area and my wife all come in to play here!

Two main sizes I am considering

7m (22ft) x 3m (9ft)… which I will divide the 7m length to have 3.5m (11ft) x 3m (the 3.5 m length allowing for the length of my boards , I only really do short boards)

the other option would be

4.5m (14ft) x 3.75m…which I will divide the 4.5m length to have 2.25m(7ft) ( again the 3.75m length to allow for length of boards)

the second option saves me quite a bit in costs (bearing in mind the permit will cost around $600, half the coast of the shed itself!!)

Great to get thoughts/opinions on having only 2.25 (7ft) width to work in?

Thanks again

M

Hey what’s up saltbush, my shape bay is only 2.23m wide; you’re in the zone there. I have a dust collector in here now, and racks, cut guides for blank building, etc… Decent room. It think too wide and your shape lights lose effectiveness at rail contours (at least mine do; I use LEDs). I read somewhere 2.7m is the max width recommeded unless you build mega deep work shelves and pull those lights inward. I do a bunch of gnarly work in here; mostly concept furniture. Planers, table saws, the works all fit into this dungeon.

Throw up some pics when you get going!

Hey vaeske

Great heads up…I was thinking around 2.5m would pretty good…for the same reasons u mentioned, don’t want those lights too far away. I’m using flouro tubes, and currently the shed I shape and sand is 3m x 3m and i reckon the lights could come closer.

I won’t have the dust extractor, but I will be dividing the shed 4.5m x 3.75m into halves, so I will have two sealed rooms/areas 2.25m x 3.75m…so no dust contamination (or at least very little!)

Few months away, but willos some shots!

Yeeeeew

Heya vaeske im assuming that pic is your 2.23m wide bay? Looks wider than that…if it is at 2.23, I rekn I’d be able to work in that area quite easily!

woops, correction: 2.33m. My bad. I went into the room and remeasured. I think You could do well with 2.1m, SUPs and racing hulls require a little more room, but it sounds like your doing shorties.

All good.

this guy’s shaping in a 1.8m x 3.6m: http://www.swaylocks.com/comment/1229077/Re-rickrickrick-Shaping-Room-Size

Yeh

have seen some of buds posts of his work…unreal…all done in that one space!

keeps it super clean, is a credit to him!!

checked out some pre-fab sheds and im thinking the 2.25m that i will have will be workable. Each 2.25m bay will be 3.75m long, with a wide door (not a double) at the end!

think its gona work well!

I’ve been working in a 6’ x 12’ shed and ideally I’d want a space 8’ x 16’.

I had a lot of rooms and always was partial to 8 x 14. Had to be big enough to hold some dust but everything had to be close, not any extra walking.

i have a 7’ x 11’ room and it is a perfect size for shorties. logs get a little cramped but do-able. i have shaped a few SUP’s by opening up doors at one end…

there are some good previous threads - show me your shaping rooms…
