OK, folks, this is Episode 4 in the ongoing San Diego Swaylocks get-togethers to mow foam and sling resin… Since I have some time off work this one is going to be mid-week, but I figure enough others will be off just between Xmas and New Year that it’s a decent time.
Come on down, bring yer templates, foam, blanks, fin projects, resin tint plans, whatever. I’m probably going to be making a gun, maybe some fins. And I hope to have a glass slab by then with sandpaper on it, so everybody can have a sharpen-off as well… We’ll surf after, low tide in the p.m. Then a beer chugging contest, ha ha.
Though I haven’t posted here much, I’d like to be a fly on the wall and watch you guys shape/glass some boards. I dont know about the surfing part afterwards. Broke my leg back on Oct 5th and dont have the docs OK to go back out yet
Drop me an email if you have any questions for me.
that would be sick… althou I woulnt make is that I will be cold as hell in jolly olde. have fun and I swear if I dont make it to the next ony I am going to rethink my use for living… I need some help. take care all.
What’s the glassing situation? I have a blank sitting in the garage waiting until I get the cash to glass it.
So… Will there be any glassing going on at your place? If so, what materials do I need? I have ZERO glassing experience… unless you consider ding repair to be “experience”…
If you want to glass your (shaped) blank, there will be plenty of help, tools, & (reasonably) expert advice. I wish I had enough glass & resin to say just bring the blank, but it really gets expensive… so, you need glass cloth (4 oz for shortboard, 6 oz for longboard) and probably a gallon of laminating resin. I have catalyst, tools, acetone, razor blades, respirators, pigments, tape, squeegees, etc… but you need to supply your own cloth & resin. Mitch’s in La Jolla is a good place to get it. Even doing one side of your board will be quite an experience, if you’ve never done it before. Generally the top of the board gets 2 layers & the bottom gets one. So a 6 foot board needs 2 yards of cloth for the bottom, and 4 more for the top…
ok guys, here’s a pretty serious head’s up. Its supposed to really rain on Tuesday & Wednesday, and my shaping area is outdoors. If it really pours (like some of the weather forecasts are saying) we are going to have to postpone. Sorry, but the power tools in the rain is not a good combo…
Keep an eye here, I’ll try to post as soon as I can if we are going to move the date. Most likely next time that will work is Saturday, Jan. 8th.
it is sunny and windy here, with clouds on the horizon to the north of us (already passed by). No guarantees on the weather. Worst case scenario we can make fins in the garage while we drink beer. But I’m still hoping for better conditions than that.
