Ok guys I know I’ve asked a lot of questions on here but I am finally going to order my materials. I was thinking of purchasing this kit http://www.foamez.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=23_47&products_id=392 along with orange tint and FCS fin skegs. Would this be enough for my first board? Keep in mind that I will probably make a mistake or two along the way. Also, can FCS plugs be put on with hand tools or do you need a drill? Just want to ask because I do not want to get everything and have to order more glass/resin. Thanks a lot.
given your locale, you’d probably be much better off to call up Green Light Surf Supply and order an eco-friendly kit from them. they had a deal that just expired that gave a nice discount on a second blank when you ordered a board kit. beg and plead, and they’ll probably still give it to you if you call quick. i’ve heard only the best things about them.
and i’d pass on the FCS fin plugs…ProBox is far superior in every way, and has a stupid-easy install (and it takes FCS fins).
Ok thanks anybody else have any opinions? I want to order this tommorow morning.
Thanks
Order what ever kit suits your fancy
but
if your gonna do fin boxs go with the probox
Contact Larry@proboxfinsystems.com The guy will set you up with all you need (except router) to do the probox install
And its sooooo easy to do
the first time I did it it came out good the second time it looked profesional
ProBox does have a lot going for it. Single depth route. Great install video online. The router bit comes with, and the jigs, I think. His boxes adjust fore and aft, cant, and soon, toe-in. Some killer fins too, and/or use FCS fins.
If you trip and decide to take it to a pro, the jigs, bit, single depth route, and install video make it a good bet a local glasser will give 'em a shot.
ok guys everything sounds great but I have a problem, do not have a router and don’t plan on buying one. Is there any way to install FCS or probox without one? If not, I guess i will just have to use glass ons. Thanks
If your good at carving shure you could do it
Ive installed others by using a hole saw at each end of the cut out and a hacksaw blade to cut the sides
then with a cutting tool on a drill cut out the foam
ok thanks alot, one more thing. I want to make an orange board. Should I apply surfboard paint to the blank or get orange tint. The easiest process possibel, keep in mind this will be my first board. You guys have been so helpful!
Orange is a pretty tough color to get right, unless you make it pretty opaque and have a really clean finished blank. I always do tint for my boards when I’m adding color and it’s really not that hard. Just tape your cutlaps well. It really isn’t as hard to do as some people say it is. I mean if I can figure it out then anyone can. Glass-ons aren’t hard to do either, just not my cup of tea. Especially all the extra time it adds to sanding. When are you planning on adding fins to this thing? I’m down in RI and have a router and the Probox jigs you could use. Only issue is I’ll be back in VA until Jan 22. But otherwise I’m up in Scituate everyonce and a while.
Ok thanks Rachel, I might take you up on the offer but i want to see if its somewhat easy to do install the fins without a router. As for Probox, I emailed the guy a couple days ago and he still hasn’t replied. Is there anywhere you can order these online and get a kit without a router jig? I ordered all of my materials off Foamez this morning. Thanks
get a cheepy router from harbor freight
or borrow one for an hour
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=44914 would the jig fit on this router? 20 dollars is a deal. Thanks.
For FCS you only need a drill.
Any router works as long as it has a base plate
the guides actualy stick to the bottom of the board and the router bit has a bearing that follows the inside of the guides
probox’s look to me to be a bit stronger then FCS’s
plus versatility
yea I am going to go with probox, easier install, thanks for all the help.

If you can’t get a hold of Larry, go directly to the source.
thanks shaka, but I was wondering where anyone knows where I can buy these online? On the probox site there is no link to buy stuff.

Dang, you’re right … The only thing I can think of is driving down to Larry’s place and picking them up myself, then I can ship them to you… You used to be able to order them online. I don’t know what happened …
