Shaping Stands

Hi everyone,

I’m new here and am interesting in getting into shaping. I would like to make some stands to start out. I already checked the archives and didn’t find much details. Does anyone know where there are some good instructions on how to make stands?

Thanks a lot

Hey Barrel,

Welcome aboard!

Have a look at Stephen Pirsch’s website and read his “How To Build Your Own Surfboard” online book. Use the “Stands And Blocks” chapter with a little imagination and presto!

You’ll find plenty of variations on here with some careful searching.

(I knew how to word my search and what I was looking for.)

Here are a pic of my stands i was dumb enough to spend a ton of money on premade ones mine are adjustable but if you can weld then you can make your own for cheap. Hope this helps

I built mine to fit onto an old sawhorse. Used nothing but plywood and foam. Cost me about $10-15 and worked great. You can see them in my thread #0001.

Old Ironing boards are good too, on their legs or upside down, fully adjustable…

Chips probably got a few pics…

I don’t have any pics, but for the base, I picked up a pair of strange cement anchors? from home depot which cost about 4$ each, and work great. I have no idea what they are intended for, but they can be found at the end of the lumber section in the encintas home depot. They are molded/poured concrete and have a square base, with a slightly smaller square top which helps with stability. They look like steep piramids with the top chopped.

Out of the top are two metal braces or straps with holes for nails or screws. To these straps we simply built and attached the same kinds of 2x4 stands as posted in a previous thread. One tip is to use a piece of 1/4 inch ply as a shim between the straps and the 2x4 as there is a bit of gap.

Here’s mine… basically a 2"X12" plank with 2"X4" uprights, diagonal supports screwed to blocks and 1"X4" lengthwise stabilizers. No specific dimensions - I just threw it together.
