That Wave Rider board must have been a nightmare to glass! Very generous of you to share, unfortunately my computer skills don't get much better than this!
There’s BoardCad, AkuShaper and Shape3D lite. All are free or have limited free version. As far as saving to PDF, AKU will create an 81/2’ x 11" PDF that has the vector outlines that you can scale up to actual size in a vector program like Illustrator.[img_assist|nid=1056436|title=|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=640|height=527]
YES Surfoils!! I love that first Blue Hawaii, I had one like that in the late 80’s but with a swallow tail, I loved that freaking board. Oh who could forget the Martin Potter bullseye! One of my favorite surfers growing up.
Anyway the only thing I can think of is if you have BoardCad you can print out a basic 8.5 x11 jpeg template spec sheet thing. It has the basic dims with a couple of cross sections. Go to File-Print, then Print Spec Sheet to File, then save as. Lots of measuring to get all that stuff into the computer though. Might be better off with just those pics with the basic nose, width, tail, thickness and rocker dims for each board.
Thanks for all that guys, I had a quick look at those programs and Ive downloaded a few one page templates, and then fluffed around copying them at 800% or 600% to get them to the right size, but the skinny lines on the page also expand by 800% so they look like chunky crayon draggings.
Does anyone know of a program where you can put the curve onto a multi page printout like this....
if you move the file from aku shaper across to board cad, yolu can print the file and make awesome templates from it, plus it very easy to get the a4 paper and copy into a template cause it only prints off half the board. Damn easy and good.
Thanks for sharing so much, so generous of you to those backyard shapers out there like me. Im throthing over the zap, beautiful.........
Di99er, does boardCad print it out as a multi page 1:1 real life scale ?? Cuz thats what I want.
I'll give that a better look, but Ive trolled thru the archives here and found a 2004 thread started by Janklow and a French guy had a link to www.surfdesigner.com and thats a real no-nonsense 60 sec template program.
BoardCAD will export/print full scale drawings of rocker, outline and cross-sections. You can choose which orientation you prefer (landscape/portrait) when you print. They are organized in pages/columns. Works great. I do it all the time.
I use AKU shaper to print full size profile and outline templates onto 8.5"x11" sheets of paper. You’ll have to get familiar with the program but its quite user friendly. The easiest way is to take a good photo of your outline or profile then load it to your pictures on your computer.Click FILE on aku shaper then NEW.Choose the type of board outline, shrtboard, longboard, etc. Then click FILE again and choose IMAGE BOARD then either OUTLINE or PROFILE.From there you can choose a photo from your computer load it to your shaper program. From ther it tells you how to line the pictures nose and tail up with aku, then you manipulate the curves until they match your photo. Then click FILE and SAVE.Whenyou want to print your templates go to FILE,PRINT,then PRINT FULL SIZED OUTLINE(or profile if its a rocker/foil shot). You can then spray adhesive them to masonite and cut a hard template with a skill saw.
I’d recommend doing what jesus said but once you save the outline in AKU shaper, open the file with BoardCad. BoardCad allows you to print on 8 1/2 x 11 sheets but, the outlines are on a grid background. Just a personal preferance.
I like surfdings responses here. What so hard about making templates by hand? That to me is fun. Copying someones templates by computer without asking is bad, not that I think there are that many people here that have the ablity to replicate a board from a template. I have seen enough of them over the years say something like: “This is a copy of a @#$$%” all the while the finished product looks nothing remotely like it.
I thank you all for your suggestions, I've found a really quick way of making a General Flip Template, you know, the ones where the front and tail curve are on either side of a piece of ply ?
ghettorat… I couldn’t agree more. I have a nasty cold/sinus infection and spent a few hours today in the garage coming up with two original templates for two 5’8s. And for a few hours, I didn’t feel so sick… I didn’t have to listen to my kids fighting and screaming… I could breathe some cold, fresh, January air… with the low winter sun beaming through the window behind me… And I could just work with my hands and eyes. No thinking required! Ha!
Funny thing… people make such a big deal about templating, and it’s one of those things that I personally think matters least! It still matters, but other things matter so much more. I find it kind of ironic.
No disrepect to the guy who’s offering his templates for free. That’s a totally cool thing to do, and I’d like to meet this guy and check out his boards (I dig boards from that era and have one myself). But template is just one element if you want to reproduce a board like that.
Atomized you are the first person and swaylocks to show the proper way to print out a template. For the last 5 years I’ve seen so many post of people talking about gluing sheets of paper together? i CRINGE each time I hear such a thing. Thank you for showing the correct way. If your going to do a craft use the right tools.
