After 20 years of working with wood and using planers and chisels. One way to sharpen is use a stone with a light bit of oil on the stone. Hold your planer blade at the angle of the blade. Push in forward strokes only, not back and forth. You shouldn’t need to use the stone on the flat side unless there is a nick or burr on the blade. When the blade has become sharp, lightly touch and drag on your fingernail and it should make a small shaving with no effort, then you know it is sharp. Take your time and watch your blade angle when sharpening. It also may be your planer, some have better blade quality than others and some cut at a steeper angle which is to aggressive for a surfboard stringer. Stay Solid Dave
You can contact Hatch Grinding Wheels for any and all sharpening stones and wheels you need. I know they sell to Japan Woodworker. They are in the L.A./So. Bay area. Call (310)324-6341 and ask for Dylan or Mike and they’ll set you up with everything you need. Very good service and prices for all the stones I picked up.
