Shop vac sander

Came across this at Lowe’s. Tried it a little last night and seems to work pretty well. Nice to have when you work in your own garage.

Drywall sander?  Right??

Is it that the 6gal size? If so, I own that one too. It’s ok, except that it requires bags to operate properly. If your trying to use it without the bags, the filter clogs quickly & then the exhaust spews whatever dust your trying to collect and/or suction decreases (trust me I know this from experience). At this size, your going to be changing bags frequently during a board build.

Not really sure what your trying to tell us in this post. For sanding your blanks? Sanding your lams/laps/hot coat etc.? I think if you want to use this it would work better if you also used one of those “cyclone type” seperators on the hose before it reaches the vac.

Sorry for not being specific.  Yes, it is the drywall sander that I was trying to point out.

Did some more sanding today.  I find that it works better if you slide your hand through the handle rather than using the handle.  If you hold it using the handle, there’s a bit of chatter.  Seems to pick up the foam dust better when you’re working on the deck or bottom since the board kind of “catches” the foam.

I shape in my garage and hate all the foam dust from shaping in there.  The last few boards I shaped outside and would walk the blank back and forth into the garage for lighting to see shadows.  Then take the board back out to shape.  Kind of a pain but at least no foam dust mess in the garage.  The real hassle was hauling my shaping stands, sanding blocks, tools, etc. outside to shape.  Then bringing everything back into the garage.

This attachment cost about $35.  There is still a bit of a mess when shaping rails and nose / tail areas as the suction cannot pick up all the foam dust but it is considerably less than not having the vacuum attached at all.  There also seems to be some parts that dig into the blank harder than other areas.  But perhaps it’s my own technique so time will tell.  You still have to do some cleaning up at the end but  overall, I think it’s worth the money for the reduced mess and not having to move everything back and forth.
