SHOP VAC

There was post a few weeks ago about an electrical plug that swivels so the cord never twists. It is unreal,I emailed the makers and they are waiting on approval from Underwriters Lab.The guy who designed it lives on Oahu.It is in the archives.I am buying a two bag dust collector on wheels with a remote switch.I plan on running a duct in to the new shaping room so the vaccum stays outside.Thinking about getting all of the stuff from Grizzly Tools. You can check the online catalog. Hey RB - I’ve been thinking about that swivel A/C plug and that seems like it will be useful to the non-vacuum guys… but unless your vacuum hose swivels too (something I haven’t figured out, but no reason it couldn’t work) I don’t see how having the power cord swivel would help much.

PS after trying many arrangements I hang my vacuum hose by bungee cord too, but always thought it was a bit of a kluge… hearing the fact that RH does it too makes me feel better!

aloha,

Keith

Yo Keith…they make vac attachments that swivel.Just have to figure out how to attach them to a planer.I saw a pic in an earlier surfers journal of Reynolds Yater’s shaping room.He had a nice setup where there was wire cable suspended from one end of the shaping room to other. The cable was anchored with eyebolts. He has pulleys(sailboat type) hanging from the cable and the cord is looped so it will extend as you walk down the blank. The cord is hanging from a bungee for flex.Looked real sweet and cheap too. RB

Hey RB - I had the wire & pulley arrangement for a while. Ended up swapping it out for just a higher central hang point with bungees, which seemed to work better for me. I’ll look into the vac hose swivels, although I’ve gotten to where I just occasionally do a 360 if I’ve managed to twist up my hose…

(which by the way is the Clark slinky stuff that I highly recommend if you’re going to do this type of thing…)

Does anybody have photos of these trick hose hanging set-ups?

Here’s my setup. Its a Bosch planer. The dust port is rectangular, so I cut a piece of high density foam to go over the port to make it round. A cup from Ikea mates to that, with another hole in the small end. A washing machine drain hose comes out. The far end of that has a reducer from shop-vac size made of pipe insulation & pipe wrap tape. Everything is pressure-fit so it comes apart easily and is used on other tools. It rarely clogs, with foam or wood. The shop vac is a big one. I don’t hang the hose, you get used to which way you have to move after a few passes.
