Short sighted - what are the options for surfing without glasses ?

I am a member of the short sighted surfing club. My solution is "accuvue" daily disposal contacts. There is no way I would I consider surgery considering I can get contacts to work well. On dry land I am completely happy in glasses, its my personality and I would not feel completely dressed without my glasses.

being able to see properly in the water is important for judging the arriving set. When surfing spectacularly scenic places like my normal spot being able to see the sunrise and the fantastic way it lights up the bright orange/brown of the cliffs is part of what makes the surfing experience special so I don't want to surf short sighted. Some of the injuries I have aquired over the years (I'm 50) have required surgery and it was the right thing, but nothing is ever the same after surgery so I am a believer in the non-surgical options.

I reckon that wiping out with contacts at my favourite spot when its solid help focus my mind. When I get sucked under I think to myself - half open my eyes - enough to locate the surface but not so much that my contacts get swept away. I surf every weekend, saturday and sunday (its fairly consistent in Vic, Aus) and lose a contact maybe once a year.

Howzit marsh, I can't believe how bad I typy on this laptop but it's the keyboard that is not right and if I don't hit some of the keys hard enough they don't show up on the page so please excuse any mistakes. I think the doctors in this town have got something going with the people who give the tests since it seems like they all just want to have us do the test thing. personally I don't think the insurance company will OK the test since it is the most expensive one there is and I just had one 2 1/2 months ago. I think the weight loss is from not drinking enough water and that is something you need to do here in Az or you might have a heat stroke. I am not worried and if I do have cancer again then I will just have to deal with it since it's one ofthose " Been There Done That " situations. Aloha,Kokua

To Kana,

I had two retinal surgeries in the past 6 months.  The Doc told me yesterday that it would be foolhardy to surf again if I wanted to keep my eyesight.  I have been living a fricking half life since the op and have decided to risk it and go for a surf.  The main potential risk is any contact with the head from wiping out or falling off, since this could cause a tear again. Have you had any further problems with your sight due to surfing, has it effected your sight further??  Did your surgeon fit you with a scleral buckle too?? I am down to 50% in my right eye and risk losing it if something bad happens but I'm putting it in God's hands, I'd also like to have the best possible protection, do you think goggles would help?? Any other advise??

Thanks! Peace,

Alex. (Ireland).
