Shortboard Dimensions:Flotation & Rocker

Questions for some shapers on here.

I am going back to a performance squash Poly board (I have been riding epoxy fish boards for a while now).

What I had eyed out is a 6’5" X 19" X 2 1/2" squash tail.

It generally has a low entry rocker with a decent amount of rocker in the tail…however I regard myself as a front footed surfer IE: more triming/speed generating off the front foot.

I am 6’1" and weigh about 193 lbs.

Questions:

1-For a performance shortboard what do you all think with regards to bouancy/flotation vs. my weight, you think I have enough flotation from that or should I go for more?

2-In regards to the accelerated rocker in the tail, what can I expect from that considering the low entry rocker in the front?

Thanks.

i reckon that board is spot on for 180 …

i would say you would wanna go 19 1/4 may be 3/8 for you weight …

dono about the tail flip …i hate it with a passion much rather see a little outline curve instead of tail flip…

if your waves are super sucky and have power plus yea a little tail rocker wont hurt …but if your waves are average power , then not to much tail…

Hi Bert,

So you are thinking a 1/4" wider and 1/8" thinner then, and keep the length at 6’5"?

This is basically the template…take a look at the “MX” Channel Islands board:

http://www.cisurfboards.com/surfboards.asp

Select the drop down for shortboards, you can see the “MX” model on there…you can get a view of the rocker from the side.

Also take a look at the “Tri-Plane” hull model on there…I had one of those (6’6" X 18 3/4" x 2 3/8") and completely hated the thing…don’t know what the concaves did under the back foot with this board but I couldn’t get good turns with this thing at all, the thing was completely non-responsive for me…maybe more designed for a rear footed surfer.

Thanks.

yea 6’-5" x 19 3/8 x 2 1/2 would suit your weight closer…that rocker will make you trim more forward and not be able to linger to long in back foot manouvers, if you wanna keep that rocker and still get a little more drive off the back foot ,then you will need between 14 1/2 to 14 3/4 tail and more area at the 3" mark something like 8" at the 3" mark …

the other option is have the tail around 14 1/4 and run a slightly flater tail…definatly run the flat tail option if you like to feed all your weight into your back foot through turns…if you like to have the tail feel free and not have to push it to hard go the first option with a looser fin set…

Dolemite:

I’d think the suggestions here are pretty close.

I’m 5’8" and a pound or two under 200 (depending on breakfast  ). The closer you are to 20" wide with a 2.5" thickness the better. You’ve probably got some room to play with in that area, since your weight should be distributed better than mine with your height.
