Shortboard Dimensions For Kids

dims are 5'2" x 16 7/8" 1 7/8"...

A kid can duck dive that!

Very reasonable.

Hey surfding,

Thanks for your information. Love the numbers mate. Thanks for posting, I've added the file to my little collection. Between that, the 5'9 and the other posts that have been so freely given I've now got a good platform to work on depending on their skill levels. Stay tuned for the end product!

Mick

Hey Ledge71

Haven't posted photos for ages.

Cant remember how to do it.

We'll see what happens.

Cheers

Nice work MDS.

Is that a little home made dust extraction system I see there in the corner?

Hey Ledge71

Yep. Home made dust extraction.

A slinky hose from my planer to some pvc tubing to the bucket which is setup as a kinda funnel system to catch most of the foam then into the vac.

Work well with PU but not that good with EPS.

I've got a dust buddy to attach to my sander but I haven't done a board with it yet.

Did a bit of a test on an old board and seemed to work OK though.

Will see how it goes.

Cheers

Hey MDS,

Checked out that Dustie Control Shroud, what a great idea! Hope it works as well as they say it's supposed to. Would make me feel a lot happier using something like that to sand the board in the workshop (section of the garage), specially with the kids in the house. Thanks for the heads up!

Mick

Hey ledge71

I will be sanding an 9'0" epoxy and this grom board in the next week or so. will let you know how it goes.

give these guys a try:

Hey guys, here it is finished. The blank picture is one for an 11 year old girl who is just starting out!

Thanks for all your advice and help. I'm looking forward to hearing from the young fella as to how it goes!

Here is what I just went with for my 10 year old.  Its 5'6 x 18.75.

A few things to consider, how big is the kid? How athletic is he, does he skate and do other stuff? If he is really athletic he will progress faster so you can scoot to the higher performance side of the spectrum. How big is his dad? Any older than 8 or 9 you have to be prepared for the guy to be going through massive growth spurts. I will post a file later today of what could work. Don’t do an ultra light glass job quite yet, a little weight helps them get into waves when they are still feather weights, That was my biggest hurdle to overcome when I started riding highperformance boards, I couldn’t sit way out on the shoulder and paddle in.

since my aku shaper is being a piece of poop right now, keep the outline a lot of these guys have put up, and think about maybe using a swallow tail on the board so it will be able to keep the width some width under his back foot and so it doesn’t slide out.  keep in mind when you are small it is hard to put the board on rail so anything you can do in the design to make that easier you should think about it.

Good advice Rider, thanks. And Mark, as usual nice work. Looking forward to seeing the art work.

Mako, great job there to mate. How cool is it to make your kids their own boards! I hope he's as stoked as you!

Yeah I’m a little late to this thread but I am making boards for my 9yo & 6yo who do pretty good already.

The dims I have are pretty consistent with the rest of the advice on here and come out around 17-19lts in volume, but my issue is getting the right amount of nose & tail rocker.

Can anyone advise on what they used for sizes 4’10 to 5’0?

Right now I have 4" 5/16 for the nose and 2 1/2 for the tail and it looks pretty extreme

Thanks for any advice!

nycwipeout:

This is base on kids that surf waves at a young age.

Turning hard off the bottom riding in the pocket.

Spending time in the barrel.

When my son was 5 this is what he rode.

It’s still relevant today.

It will be criticized however we are talking about kids.

Their minds and bodies can handle it.

As we get older these types of shapes become unrealistic.

This is what you put under their feet if you want them to advance.

Since Dad’s are on this tread here’s one of my sons years later in INDO, Australia (D-Baugh) and HB Shore break:

Here’s a plan:

The rocker is base on true math. Nose and Tail are at ZERO (Both Level).

The curve of this model fits the pocket of the wave. Again this is for
actual surfing.

Wave Riding.

Not for being push by the foam.

Make a Baby
Egg for 3 years old.

After about 5 or 6 years old that’s when the tough
love comes in.

Challenge your kids.

surfding

Hi folks,

I don’t mean to hijack this thread, but it’s sort of relevant to the next board build I have planned, so I thought I’d add a question or two.

I’m planning to build a couple of mini mini boards for my daughter and her cousin, who are both 3yo. They’re going to be based on the following plan:

[img_assist|nid=1062288|title=A suitable board for a 3yo?|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=284|height=402]

Ignore the name, it’s just a convenient tag so I can find it in the computer when I go looking for it. Basically I’m aiming for something that’s got enough bouyancy, but is not too wide for their limited wingspans. It’s got no sharp points, so less chance of injury. For someone who’s only just pushing 3 feet, it’s effectively a mini mal.

I want it to be user-friendly enough to inspire the surf stoke and hook them both into a salt water based existence and to be of a size so it won’t need replacing for some years to come. The more surfers in the family, the more people nagging mum to go to the beach.

Can anyone give their opinions on the shape and/or dimensions detailed?

Cass: That is a good design for the 3 year girls.

They will love them.

When you take kids out as you may know.

Small low tide is best.

Deep water will freak them out.

Kind regards,

surfding

Thanks so much surfding!!!

The video is great!

Surfding!  Thank you so much for the board specs that you posted above.  The picture below is a shot of my boy one week after turning five years old.  He’s riding my 6’8".  I’ve been wondering what kind of dimensions would be right for him.  I’m going to build him a board similar to the one you posted.
