wow ! i must say super super sick board! good job
Nice
what is the tail called?
John Cherry is the man.
It’s a Bat Tail
does the tunnel have to be there to qualify for the name “battail”?
I will have something special to share as soon as I get the rest of the fins
The tail on this board has the same outline that Wil Jobson puts on his boards. The relative dimensions, taper and tail block width are very close to what he would do. I can’t speak to the rest of things with a first hand look. Wil is a friend of mine and is the originator of the Twinzer. He came up with design back in about 1980. Many different versions of it have evolved over the years. I’d call the tail on the board in the photo a fangtail or a Jobson tail. Generally a bat tail has a third point in the middle of the tail.
No Worries, Rich
This board is based on a Jobson Twinzer 5’11" that I own. It is my favorite board that I did not make myself.
And it certainly should be called a Jobson tail. Apologies for not crediting him. I shaped my rails a bit
different then the Jobson that I own, no bevel on this board. I though it is called a bat tail because it looks like
the top of the 70’s batman hood.
I don’t know why more people don’t ride the twinzers, they rock, if you can get a Jobson get one you won’t be
dissapointed. I think he is working with Mandala surfboards, but I could be wrong.
Halcyon, any chance of getting the details on fin setup? I’ve seen a few, always seemed to be more close set than these, but (perhaps) more importantly, I’ve never been able to tell
1, if the front fins are double or single foil, and 2, if they are the same toe, and cant (?) as the rears
on a Jobson twinzer
*sorry for semi-hijack
How far off from the truth are the lines I drew on the picture of your board?
Do they cross in the area indicated? … and ‘why’ …if you’re so inclined.

Yo Janklow,
I’ve made fins for Wil. His own templates are excellent. Joey Thomas has his version as does Vince Broglio, both are right there in the twinzer loop on the west side of Santa Cruz. Mark Goin shapes in the same place with them and is IMHO the best Twinzer shaper on the planet. Wil is up on Whitbey Island taking care of his mom these days.
Depending on the board the main fin is set between 9 and 10 inches from the tail the lead fin or canard at 1 1/4" to and
1 1/2" forward and outboard of the leading edge of the main fin. Cant on main fin is pretty much universally set at 2 degrees. Cant on the canard may vary from 4 to 10 degrees depending on how stiff you want the fins to be. Toe-in is set about an inch outside the tip of the nose of the board.
The fins are perfectly parallel.
Future fin systems with a C5 box for the canard is the one of choice with the boyz I’ve mentioned. I’ve done lots of experimenting with fin templates and foils and have to say that this type of board responds beautifully to custom fins.
There are huge variations in the set-up as you travel from place to place but here main fins generally ring around 5.25" or a little more and canards about 3.0" or so. Stay close to Wil’s original design if you want to maximize performance.
Stay Stoked, Rich
I think that the board angle at which I took the pic is throwing off your lines.
The fins are parralel with each other.
WOW
Awesome–thanks Rich–you want payment in banknotes or gold?
greg
…Halcyon, whats your opinion to put this set up in a fish platform? (5 4- 5 11)
thanks
Yo Reverb,
IMHO, it’s the best fin set-up there is for a small wave board for many reasons. Three principle ones are less drag, more drive, and better maneuverability. Done right, and that’s the key, the twinzer fin set-up can be the best one for the complete other end of the scale. Ask Richard Schmidt what kind of fin set he rides on his tow-in boards.

Hey Rich,
This one guy and me were shooting the fin bull, as it were, one time, and one of us, I forget who, theorized that perhaps, just maybe, the two fins, on a Twinzer ekspecially, might act as two elements of a multi-element wing foil, the canard enhancing the attachment on the foil side of the second… have you any thoughts on that?
It doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things, since they do work by common acclaim, but I just wondered if that were part of the deal.
This post has been officially hijacked. At least throw in some pics of what you are talking about. Hence show me your twinzers in the subject line.
nys–no hijack meant–this was supposed to be a net thread about Twinzers–you threw out the net, is what I mean.
I’m talking about: http://www.collectorstudio.com/ms04noserep.jpg
Here’s more of what I’m talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Leh_gE7VIQE What’s going on there, and what’s really going on there.
My question was (to the renowned fin guy who knows the very twinzer guy and lots of the twinzer guys) about what makes twinzers so awesome, in terms of their management of flows.
IMO this isn’t off the topic. More pictures of people’s twinzers would be nice, but I don’t think there are that many–talking a bit (or a lot) about how they work and the stuff already given by Halcyon above are worthy of a bit of space before the thread falls–if ya do a search of “twinzer” and this thread turns up with info from a luminary like Rich … and if Wil or someone he mentioned turned up to talk a bit, you’re stoked!
I’d argue these cult board threads need to be (or might as well be) fleshed out into compendia on this website
Go figure ~
Photos are what’s important.
To hell with technical info.
If you originate the thread you own it? Hmmmm…
The little fin quiets the water for the big one.
The pair act to channel the water and create more engagement and greater efficiency.
I don’t put pictures up anymore. I quit years ago because I have to make them so small that they’re not worth keeping anymore as too much detail has to be sacrificed. IMHO If you want good photos go via email, don’t clutter up the forum. I try and upload a 34.2 KB picture and it’s too big. Forget it I’m not condensing photos to post and loose all the quality.
Idea: There are hundreds of surfboard websites on the web lots of them have Twinzer photos on them.
Mahalo, Rich
P.S. The tread is all yours I’m outa here.
