Well go on then!!!
show us the channels shaped into your board and let us know what they do!
experimentals too!
what works?? why?
also - what doesnt work!!

well since you asked
here are some pics
ill add how it rides later cuz im going surfing
ok im back
this board is super drivey down the line and is really fast, it was kind of an experiment and came out good
it turns great, although i haven’t filled in the channels to try feel the difference or anyhitng like that
overall, i like it. its a super fun board.
5’9"X19"X2 1/2" i think
Check out my thread “Best channels I’ve ever seen.” Cort Gion. Wish I had a picture. I’ll be in Oregon in a few weeks. I’ll see if I can come up with a pic or two of one of his. How do you guys put 'em in there anyway? A 2X4" with sandpaper?
So the channels basically follow the fins, concentrating the flow of water over them? A channel over each fin?
Isn’t the idea of channels that you re - direct the flow of the water…(so that instead of going diagonally across the bottom it goes from front to back)…therefore increasing thrust?
I had one board with channels before and it was very fast…but a little stiff…
Jon B. Mar:
Boards with channels feel stiff because the very structure of channels acts pretty much like corrugated iron: longitudinal stiffness is increased. Thus, tails don’t flex, or much less than other boards’.
thats nice!!
"Show us the channels in your board …
… w-e-l-l… here ya go then ! …
…“and tell how it rides…”
absolutely shithouse ! [as you might expect ]
but , hey … a science experiment gone wrong in high school was always fun ! [so …why not one in my 40’s , also ?! ]
Luckily , the blank was free , anyway ! But , it was still a waste of time , cloth , resin , finboxes , sandpaper , and spraypaint [= $$$] , in my mind , though .
Live and learn , I guess. [And , hopefully, it’s entertainmaent value for you guys , at least ?!]
cheers !

Chip----------------You’re a crack-up. First good laugh I’ve had in awhile. I wasn’t laughing at you board though. I was laughing at how candid you were about it. A friend of mine got a good laugh at my exspence recently when I told him that some of the boards I made turned out really good and some them turned out “lookin’ like s#!t”. I was referring to a period of time when I shaped, glassed and sanded all my boards. They look much better now that I turned the glassing over to a glass shop. By the way everyone; good to hear your theories on channels. I’ve not heard much on the theories behind the design.
no worries mate !
it’s part of our culture’s upbringing to be able to see the funny side of our own disasters
i make no bones about the fact that i can’t surf , shape , glass , sand , or make fins to save my life
like carve nalus siggy says ,
" i don’t know shit , but i’m having fun " [trying stuff]
And , luckily , the waves here are not a matter of life and death , anyway , so if i **** up , no big deal , eh ?
laugh at me all you like actually , mate , i reckon it’s good for the soul , anyway [it helps me keep a good perspective on things , i find …]
heck , the little old ladies and blokes where i work do it to me all the time …glad it puts a bit of joy and laughter into their lives having me there !
anyway , back to my abysmal attempt at a "b[e]nzer bottom "…
…i think , from memory , that this piece of crap
“god chip , those aren’t concaves , they’re canyons !” [shwuz , thanks !] board cost me around
$60 resin
$40 cloth
$25 spraypaint
$30 finboxes
$c10 sandpaper [aus$, that is]
…so, realistically , it wasn’t too bad , i guess !
it was more an experiment , I made it around the time that every second post seemed to be about ‘flex’ , to see if i could make a stringerless , “light” , flexy board . [that i could actually feel flex ?..
yep … it FLEXED , all right !
…[thank god ! ] it creased … after about my second or third surf on it , from memory ?!
cheers !
ben
p.s. -
THIS board , however …
[a 1970s Cordingley ‘bonzer bottom’ single fin[!!] ]
…went GREAT ! [ before it delammed , and then the tail and fin snapped off …it’s now my 5’7 3/4" ‘greenpin’ single fin board ]
…“and tell how it rides…”
absolutely shithouse ! [as you might expect ]
lol! classic ben! it looks that way, too, but goodonya for havinago! happy australia day mate!
