I’ve been looking for a set of longer based keel fins that would fit in all three fcs plugs but only have a depth of 3-4"s.
Keen to get drive and hold for fast down the line speed.
I’ve not found anything along those lines and came across these fins while hunting around… http://www.reefshark.com.au/
These could actually work quite well so I’m going to give a pair a try and will report back.
I’ve used all manner of fins on my surfboards (Spitfires, turbo tunnels, wavegrinders, bonzers, butterflys and the like) so I’m looking forward to the experiment.
Hey Cuttle, good to hear the curved fins worked well, I'll see if I can grab a pair on eBay.
If you want to experience something amazing, make a tunnel fin like in the top pic. Just cut a 4in section of water pipe and either glass or glue it to anything. Amazing performance but overlooked !
If you cant be bothered I'll make one for you, just let me know.
He’ll be keen, he is a fin fiend as much as me…haha… its good of you to offer Surfoils, should be MORE of it I reckon…I’d be interested to hear more about your thoughts on the tunells , how’d they go on a standard shorty type board you think ? as you know I am always trying new stuff and this interests me for sure…
Here is a one-of-a-kind designed and manufactured by Mr Wayland (RIP.) Nels Norene has a website, Vagabondsurf.com that featured more of Wayland's outer limits experimentation...
Since I’m running a twin fin with fcs tabs I’m having a think about how I could make some mini pipe fins with fcs tabs.
Especially after seeing John’s photos (thanks John) which makes me think along the lines of a set of old fcs tabbed fins with a section of pipe grafted onto them (think turbo tunnel in how they’d look).
I have some water pipe lying around as I already make didgeridoos out of it.
Pridmore, Ive put them on mals, shorties and prone, best results were on mal and prone but only because I didnt have enough test shortboards to continue with.
I only started doing them after I saw a Hoop fin board by John Mellor.
Guys, Id go with "Half-Pipe" (180 deg) fins rather than the complete circular tube.
The one above is a 6 in diameter, 4 inch wide base, 2.5in wide at the top.
Fix it with an 8th of an inch positive angle of attack.
Potentially theyre an evolution of the flat single fin...
Cuttle, go the didge ! Ive used smaller diameter pipe and heated it to open it up and make a bigger diameter Half-Pipe Fin.
Im not in 'Pipe Fin mode' at the moment but next round I'll do the FCS plugs, good suggestion thanks..
Sorry Pridmore, all my aluminium ones were 2mm thick and with a 90 deg bent base that I screwed into each board. Basic but the results proved that thickness and foiling arent essential for fin function and Im pretty sure the thinner fins were faster to paddle and ride.
