Show us your fins and tell us about them

I notice a few very active “Show us yours” type of threads, couldn’t find an active one on fins?  I know a lot of us are looking at the individual fin threads. Does Sways need them all in one place, past and present? Lets find out?

Fins, Got anything you want to share? Bought some? Made some? Old favorites? Got any pics? Got a ride report? Want to find others to give a ride report?

These are Robin Mair fins and i have surfed nothing but this board and these fins, trying to feel it out real good. They are great fins!! Comboed with probox, can’t go wrong. I dont understand turbulent water yet, so if this reduces drag … i dont know, they feel fast, but it is the board too of course.

What type fins do you make/design with those boards of yours?

Reposted below with pics

My second choice, FCS Sunny Garcia carbon fibre set. Longer throw in the turns, I don’t tend to turn as fast and short with these compared to the TC quad set up above.

More info on wouters set up, (I asked him via a PM).

I like mine on the bottom.....towards the tail if possible.

10" Shapers Australia Big Kahuna dolphin fin. Been using it in my 9'1'' round pin tal longboard by itself ( no sides ). Freaking unreal, super drivy, but not stiff, and can be turned.

My old supercharged keel fin. Freaking fast and loose. I have a board arriving soon that has a very similar setup ( s/c keels ). Can't wait!

My favourite fin set up, FCS Tom Carrol Carbon fibre set with smaller plastic FCS GL’s. can really throw it around, get out of anything, definite wow factor when racing a wall. There is a FCS TC quad set, I haven’t bought them yet.

These are the ones I have made recently:

They have got a soft rubber edge to prevent fin cuts. The planform is elliptical.

Michael

Finaly finished the lead twinzers and fixed the board so they could be tested
Surf wasn’t the best 5ft choppy and howling onshore had it to myself though
These are definitly an improvement on the lasr two pairs I made more hold and drive plus didn’t break:-)
Glassed timber tabbed fins are a pia still havn’t finished the rears

Not sure why this is upside down it right here ahhh fixed it

Having fun with these…

Usually run a 6.5" single in the box and fcs bonzer sides which feels great but lent them to a friend to try and so put in a set of Sunny Garcia’s with an fcs adaptor in the centre box.

Not good.

Thought what the hey I’ll try the curves with the M5 which has a single base.

Carving! Felt great.

Board is a modernised 70’s template so the ride is relaxed and smooth.

When I get rich I want a se of those side fins, they look great! I wish there was a rear fin version, which was the two sidefins touching at the top, like an eliptical tunnel fin. Or the other way where they wing out at the top, sort of back to back. Great to see this post and know your enjoying those fins.

What took me down that track was using these…

Followed by putting a set of the Webber curves pictured in the orange board into my 4’2" prone board…

Match made in heaven.

Do you want to tell us about the prone board, what fins have you tried and what characteristics do they each bring. I just  set up a prone board thread because I want to ask you all about it, but answers here are just as good.

Who made it,?

Is that a double concave right through? Looks like single going to double!

How versatile is, Is there certain surf you just don’t go out in?

Do all your friends rubbish it, but you have the best time of your life on it? (mine do, but the people on the beach don’t)

Posted on new thread…

I sent Michael Frey and PM and asked some questions, he welcomed me to post his response

Hi Malaroo,

the outside fins are identical to the middle fin. This is because 90% of surfboards are built with too big toe-in-angles of the side fins. The (symmetrical) foil is NACA 0008. You may find pictures of this very frequently used foil on the internet.

So far I have no pictures or videos in action because I don´t live near the sea. We have some of them tested by british surfers since 3 months, and they are happy with it.

I´m currently setting up a website to distribute them. It´s already online at www.hamamasurf.com I have written some comments on the shape in our blog athttp://hamamasurf.blogspot.de/

During the beginning of production we always produce some pieces of second quality. They have aesthetic problems, but function is given. If you want some of those second quality parts I sell them for EUR 25,- per Thruster-set (3 pieces).

The question of outside fin angles?

Has anybody out there ever tried rear thruster fins (foiled both sides) in all three thruster postions. Sides and rear, even though the plugs for the fin tabs are set to a toed in angle …

Does it work?

How did it feel?

What changed compared to the flat inside foiled fins being on the sides?

What about, Has anyone made a board with fin plugs, set so that there is no toe in angle (so the fins are set parrallel to the centerline) and the board is ridden all fins foiled on both sides?

How did it ride?

Mine are large, tons of rake and 12mm thick - the plan is to get a twinfin looseness without the drift factor.

The set-up wasn’t made for this board specifically - initially they went on an unadulterated twin, but for the later board as pictured they work well. The quad rears are bonzer canards I made 15yrs ago - they’re there for some extra hold but minimal directional input.

A before-and-after- shot of ding damage - what fun!!!

I’ve read a lot about speedneedle today. Here you are and that board is incredible.
