Definitely going to re-read the techniques to planing thread but really just have to get used to the planer and how to position it and hold it for a more accurate cut. I tried to get a little fancy here and there but I knew I had some room to work with. The next one will be a little more controlled - I hope.

It looks good man, the main job of the planer is to just get that thickness out of the way. Pretty or not, you got the foam out of the way…

Nick you fixed your first oops! Ya nailed it. In a factory you’re only as good as you are at fixing your own FU. I hate fixing others mistakes. I have enough of my own to take care of.

One thing ya may want to do is dump the hose till ya get a feel for it. Even the best shapers would fight that fire hose. Get some 1 1/4 inch pool hose its half the size. Then hang it off a cable above ya connected on rolling pulleys.  Set your planer on your racks and set the hang length. Put a couple and some play in the hose so ya can have some pull length.

Next time take 1/4 open cuts. Baby steps take your time go slow and focus on keeping that front shoe flat and level on the cutting surface. Small passes will yelled smaller oops. The day will come when you can MOW FOAM.

If ya learn something your way ahead of the game

Huck you are a Craftsman! She is beautiful. It sound like ya reversed engineered her. You built the bulkheads after the rails? There is always another way to build a better mouse trap. Nice

Ballard Nice job. What beach you at? Looks like Da Cove. You learn anything on your first one you never did again? B)

Like Huck, my first board was a hollow wood. Mr Jensen kindly provided some guidance on the building, but I made up the shape, rocker, and thickness ( I was living about 300 miles from the nearest surfboard and didn’t know about Sways)…it is kinda a boat to surf, but it does catch waves.

Thanks - yes, I reverse engineered it - from a China board!! Turnabout is fair play, LOL.

Nice work. I remember when Paul pulled his first wood boards out of his van

I hadn’t sean anything like it. He is the original Hollow wood man as far as I know. Nice job

thanks for the comments/suggestions always helpful - The ceiling in my garage is upwards of 20’ + so it’s hard to setup something above. I stumbled across this article for a swing arm exhaust (http://www2.swaylocks.com/forums/my-new-swing-arm-dust-collection-system) which is looking like the best option to take care of the hose situation.

The first oops I had was my real #1, which I worked with someone else on. It was originally a 6’0" but due to some lack of supervision and myself being super eager to shape the board I made a nice divot on the deck in the tail. I ended up making it too thin to fit a finbox in so we chopped the tail off and made it a 5’7".

I’ll finish up #001 and then fix the exhaust before moving onto the 7’2" (#002) I have planned.

Thanks San O, I built my first back in my parents garage in Monterey some years ago. I’m now up in Seattle and have a garage of my own (my profile pic is at the Groynes). Long time lurker and finally opened an account now that I have something to contribute. Cheers!

Nice board Huck!, that thing looks great.

Keep contributing now that ya have. I like those racks PVC. You design them? Do they fold up?

Always something to ride at the Groynes. Off shore all winter.

Actually my first was a hack job.  And--I'm glad no pics. survived.  I took some total piece o' $#!t longboard dog and made a turd out of it.  But some dweeb liked it so--- I sold it to him and he caught some righteous tubes at "Oil Piers" one day ala "Pork Chop".  I was so heavily influenced by Tom Morey/Dennis Ryder and Michael Hynson that I chopped the nose off this old 9'6", split the glass back and downrailed the nose.  Re-pigmented that bitch in in "royal" blue and sold it to my unsuspecting bro..  He got some bitchin' waves that day though.  Thought he was a real hotdogger on his "Royal Blue Shovelnose Model".

Yeah, those racks could fold up and fit in the back of a sedan…it was nice for taking back and forth between Monterey and San Diego. Not very sturdy for sanding/etc though. Now that I’m not moving around I just use the cement filled Homer bucket/PVC racks. They’re not the most stable, but versatile.

11 foot ? Where is that surf shot from?
