Hey jrandy,
Getting the halos is a breeze - basically casting the resin bead before foiling and glassing the whole shebang. Here's a thread from a while back that shows the whole process starting about here: http://www.swaylocks.com/forums/bing-pipeliner-east-inspired?page=17
Good luck with your builds!
nice , cheers Tom !
so , you made those fins ?
was it resin tint and / or opaque [pigment] , combined ?
that's some decent concaves that you got going there in the board too , mate !
cheers

my new small project
silicone mold + poly resin+ tints
the mold i made it from universal silicone and corn strach :)) so damn homemade
i defo have to improve a lil bit the mold but for the moment is ok.
Hi all, still really new to building boards and don’t think I’ve had much to contribute having only been at this for a couple of years(lurking on here for 18months!) Anyway thought I should start to contribute something so thought I would add to this with my first attempt at making my own fins, ply glass on keels for my wee fish. It was a really interesting process that I will be repeating. Think I have been bitten again. Slanj
Very cool colour work spey
Yep made the fins pigment and poplar veneer have posted them earlyer thought the lb set up might be of interest.
Thanks for your kind comment, means a lot. My background is wooden boatbuilding so just loving playing with foam & epoxy pigment. Slanj Yours Aye Rikki.
Thought id make a mould of the fins i keep on snapping (4th set!). This is the first set from the mould, first time ive used carbon fiber as well. Apart from a few bubbles, i think it turned out alright… Now to try to break them!
Its fully foiled, the benefit of a mould is not having to foil it so the outsides a single layer, looks pretty, very little sanding required and no itch! I do have to make a mould of each fin though…
definitely it’s easier with a mold and hell yeaah i’ll forgot what itching mean.
the only problem is that resin fins are not that strong as the foiled but can be solved with 2-3 layers of fiber on the weak points.
Yes, i imagine that its structurally weaker than the traditional panel foiled down. Plan is for 1 layer 6oz S glass, 1 layer 4oz carbon, 3mm coremat, 6oz cloth, 3mm coremat, 4oz carbon, 6oz cloth. Tabs will be built up from cloth scraps and the gap between coremat and the edges of the mold built up with 12k carbon tow like the clear halos on most fins, fingers crossed its strong enough. Total cost: £1.30 each!
