Show us your rails !

Came across a rail shot which seems to show off the constant rail section and parallel profile ( not to mention an anomalous ripple or two) , so here it is, we are hoping to see some cool rail shots showing curves interacting and so on :

Here are some sneak preview pics of some projects I’m working on soon coming to a thread near you…

Shorty Rail I

Shorty Rail II

Single Rail I

They look nice and clean, the tail of the single looks interesting, high volume with a hard edge ?

Gracias senor Bloke. I really like the perspective of your rail shot with the rocker contrast. I’ve been meaning to take some shots with a perspective like the one you used, although I don’t think they will look as nice as my boards probably have far less rocker. In fact the rocker in the single probably has less at the tips than your does 1” off center. lol. BTW how long is that board? My boards are short, very short. Six foot and change and I think the single is 5’9” if memory serves me correct. Short boards with low rocker probably make for boring pictures, but more contented surf for me anyway. lol. I save the grandiose rocker for the bigger boards, bigger wave boards that is. I just glued up a couple of small wave eggs and you would get a kick out of their rocker. Their practically planks Bloke! lol. As far as the single goes, yes it is fat, flat, and has a hard edge. I was on the fence whether or not to run tucked under edge all the way back with a glassed on fin with all that volume, but opted to leave it hard, install a box and experiment with various fins and the hard edge. Am I worried about sliding out mid wave face with that hard of an edge and volume on a single, perhaps a tad but not enough to stop the experiment. Have I gone mad, perhaps but keep in mind I shaped a particularly hard edge into my 3’ thick fish (yes I know its twin keel) in which essentially transitioned into a tucked edge which I carried all the way up the board. How does I go, I love it although I probably would just roll the rail if someone else wanted a similar board from me, and you certainly won’t find that rail in any surf shop. I gotta tell ya Roy after fifteen years of riding white 4oz “chips” in an attempt to punt the highest air, it feels nice to shape myself off the wall boards (or at the very least bottom contours, rail contours, etc…) and find out what does and doesn’t work for me and why some things work better or worse in conjunction with others. Every once in a while it’s nice to deviate from the 6’0” thruster hard-tucked-rolled rail on most of my boards. Not all my boards, just some “special projects”. For the most part I ride pretty “conventional” equipment. So a fat, flat single with a hard edge (similar to the feel of the thrusters I’m familiar with) with a box for fin options will be a nice break from the status quo. I tell you another thing if I ever come to NZ I’ll have to look you up because riding a 15’ board looks like it would be a blast, and at the very least an eye opening experience. Hopefully some more people will post some pics, particularly from the angle you shot yours at or with the light contrast similar to the ones I shot for some comparison. Lets see some rails gents.

Regards, Tony.

Hi Tony,

Interesting how looking at rails leads naturally to talking about rocker, I suppose that’s because the rail shows us both planshape and rocker, so OT already (!) but I would be interested to know how flat the flattest foot of rocker on one of your flatter boards is, for comparsion. How much rocker at each end (equalised, same at each end ) of a one foot straightedge ?

.

Roy,

In regards to the discussion of rails leading to into rocker it really is a natural progression for myself as I tend to take into account my “rail rocker” as much as I do my “plan shape” rocker. The more I shape the more I realize there is a delicate balance between the two to find what functional form will work best for a particular board I conjunction with a given foil, and bottom contour as well. I’ll have to get back to on some of the rocker dims as a good number of my boards and all of measuring devices are locked up in my shaping studio right now and I’m at my flat actually getting ready for what I hope is a good night of sleep.

Regards, Tony.

I’m partial to this one, stoked on the vee transition I did on this 5’10 x 18.1 x 2.1 baby swallow thruster

nice

Staytrue, Sorry for getting off subject but I saw your shaping stands and had to smile. It’s the Stonehenge of shaping stands. WAY COOL brother!

Hey Bud, nice shot (and nice work, too). It reminded me of this one, a single retro I made last year:

I think the photo of Tom Blake’s should be submitted to the Sways coffee table book; if they are still taking submissions.
