Shrunken Foam Issues

I dealt with some early Bennett USA foam shortly after CG05.

(Clark Gone, everybody has ther own moniker for this,

A.C., after clark, etc.) Some blanks were good, really white,

not too soft. Others really loose LOOKING cell structure,

like North beach Point Reyes sand if ya know, compared

to fine white sand. Bitchin lookin pour marks and REAL

SOFT spots, mostly on the rails. Some worked,I

still ride one. Some didn’t, shrinkage and unhappy

customers. I never saw one that bad. Only on Safari Foam

from S.Africa. Whatch out fer that crap. Although

some of it is workin better now.

Thought Marty wasn’t with Benito anymore.

Interesting.

Them all an’ ther’ galdarn Mex conglomerate of crap

foam popout exercises can take a hike.

DON’T BUY IT!!!

Thanx fer yer time…

Try dionchemicals.com if you want to get hold of Bennetts Australia. I’ve used about thirty Bennett Australia blanks, never had any problems. Sounds like someone is getting a raw deal from a rep on this one. Otherwise I’m assuming we’re not witch hunting?

To all yez youngsters reading out there… Clark blanks would do this too, after a while. Don’t ask me how I know; I just know from personal experience. But I haven’t seen one this bad before.

For quite some years, I have not seen a board this badly shrunken. On the other hand, since everyone started using 4-ounce glass, most boards don’t last long enough in the first place.

I have a seven-year old board, and a six-year board, both of Clark. The former is my alla-da-time rider and though it’s “nicely” yellowed, it has not exhibited shrinkage. Neither has the only-very-occasional six-year old board. I presume that Clark addressed the problem which once affected him, a long time ago.

This is typically caused by the blanks being poured “off ratio”, too much of A or B. It can also happen with real low density foam being blown real thick, or shaped down too thin. Or a combination of all the above.

Velzy use to call Kim Thress who was the GM at Clark Foam and now runs US Blanks “Off Ratio” I guess cause she is pretty short, or shrunk down.

Sluggo – nostalgia.

Eeastern Pacific, what a beautiful way to change my frame of mind… let’s go for a surf!, thanks all for the help, the customer will get a replacement board, courtesy of our industry one way or another… we came in 5 minutes ahead of the second place boat in our 3 mile Keehi Lagoon sailboat race this evening!, i gave up on trying to sail the ultra light sailboat that i built, and we bought an old j-24 that is so fun to sail… i can hear the surf pounding down on the beach because of the really light winds, sunset beach is constipated with surfing contest at the moment, but pipe has been really fun for the past few days, i’ve had such a nice ride over the last 35 years… Eastern Pacific, i really appreciate that photo!, i was all grumpy and you just turned me so around , many maholos to you !,and to you all!, danny nichols

I have a shrinking Bennett also. Same period after the closure of Clark. The board that morphed was the lightest yellow density.

The green and blue were solid and turned out some quality boards.

My Question is: Has anyone experienced the shrink lately? I have moved on to some other manufacturers but would like to give

the Bennett another try if the problem has been solved. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Aloha Screwfoot

As I noted in posting the picture for Danny, the shrinking foam wasn’t a problem I was having. I haven’t heard of any current problems with Bennett Foam and always found it to be quite satisfactory. And don’t want my posting of the photo to be perceived as in anyway me personally disparaging Bennett on my part. I think you and others understand this. Just wanted to make sure.

I am almost out of my remaining stock of Clark Blanks and have begun a search for the best replacement available here in Hawaii. Should be an interesting journey…!
