side boxfins

i put in my side boxfins in and sanded them after the hotcoat, so i ended up sanding through part of the lip that overlaps onto the glass, on the box fin, i was wondering if i should have sanded first and then hotcoated so this would now occur, any suggestions?

what kind of “box fin”? (fin box)?

i’m not entirely sure what you’re talking about…but i’m pretty sure you’re supposed to sand that little overlap off. it’s just on there to make sure the box sits level over the hotcoat.

they are future fin boxes

ah…futures are typically installed into the foam…before the board is glassed.

There should be 2 intact layers of cloth over those boxes. Even after you sand, there should

be 2 layers there still. The only change after sanding is the slot for the fin opens up as the

cloth directly over the slot gets sanded away.

Did you install the boxes in the blank prior to glassing?

Were the large flanges of the boxes flush with the blank?

oops, i installed the boxes just before the hotcoat, but they were flush to the glass when i did it, so when you put it directly into the foam you still use a router right? and then glass completely over the box? how do you make sure no resin drips into the box?

use tape, and sand it off when you sand the hotcoat.

it’s like Stevil said, tape over the slot. There is tape that is 5/16" wide that just covers the slot but it is not widely available. You can just cut some wider tape after it gets stuck onto the box.

I should say, there is a case were we install on a lamination. When we do a colored resin lamination (with transluscent tint) and don’t want the thicker fin patches to make the tint change color around the boxes. So we

sink the boxes in the lamination (deck is hotcoated, and keep the bottom CLEAN) and put clear patches over them.

After this has set, we hotcoat the bottom.

A variation of this is to sink the boxes into a sanded hotcoat, and do glass-overs, and patch hotcoats. Same result.

Hope this helps.

do you have to sand before the hotcoat? because it would seem to be easier to sand after the hotcoat

Thanks Kokua, that 5/16" is good stuff!!!

HoppaBros, on the regular clear polyester glass job, you only sand after the hotcoat.

Which type of method are you asking about?

yeah that is what i thought, i read one of the other messsages wrong
