alright guys, ive been totally absorbing the archives on this. i understand the cutlap process, which i will def try on somethign else befor i do a resin tint. i also realize i have to take time cutting the nose and tail, i have a feeling the nose will be the toughest part to get folded over right. anyoen want to give any hints?? my big question is , what r u using to tint and where can i buy it? im pretty sure its not opaque, bc i thought boards with opaque jobs arent see thru. what r u using , and where can i buy it, any great places to get it, online maybe. thanks, i am really really wantign to learn how to do this. dk
I’ve found a few places online to get pigment for polyester resin. Try Fiberglasssupply.com. They have the basic colors. Some are opaque some are transparent, but with the opaque ones, adding about a half percent or so keeps it translucent so you still see the stringer. If you get the resin translucent and use lighter colors, the cutting of the lapps at the nose/tail isn’t as critical. But watch it when you start to use totally transparent colors - they’ll really let you know how consistent you’re getting the resin pulled out of the fabric. Also… using two 6 oz layers on the deck can sometimes cause “waves” of inconsistent color due to how the fabric weave matches up at intervals along the entire length of the board. Not sure how to get around this besides using 6/4 instead of 6/6 on the deck. But, Im no expert.
One more thing - if you do an opaque, try “ZIG” Opaque Writer pigment ink markers for pinlines or for signing. Always use a test piece before trying something new! Good luck - nothing beats a pigmented board!
Hello! If you use normal pigment at best you will achieve as described, an ‘opaque’ effect. If you wish for a different, clear effect (imagine transparent coloured fins) just try normal food coloring that is readily purchased from a supermarket. Try a small test batch. It is a little difficult to mix at first but will disolve eventually. I have used this to good effect on fins, not though on a board. Good luck.
All resin tint is more or less transparent. What determines the opacity is pigment/resin ratio. The more pigment the more opaque the color will be. Also by adding white pigment to your resin, this will add increased opacity. Here’s a few tips. ALWAYS mix extra resin. The absolute worst thing you can do is to not have enough. If yu are doing both top and bottom, make sure that you ahve enough left over after laminating both sides to do some spot touch up. Fiberglasssupply.com is a great source. Fiberglass hawaii is also a great source. A boating supply store will have a few basic colors. Ther’s also a bunch of places online. Just search under “resin tint” When first adding pigment, begin by using a very little amount. You can always add more pigment, but you can never take away. Add dark colors to light and test often to see where you are at color wise. But be careful, you might not need as much as you think. To do a relatively trasnparent tint for instance I’d use less than a tablespoon of pigment for an entire gallon. Pigments can be mixed with each other to achieve a complete color assortment. See a color wheel for reference. ONe thing though, be wary of mixing two different manufacturers pigments. Always have some test scraps of faom and small 4" squares of glass around to test a color. What might look like a dark coor in the bucket will actually be veryt trasnpasrent once it is on the glass. AND ALWAYS strain the final resin/pigment mix when happy with the color Lighter colors are easier to do than darker colors. Yellow is pretty easier, dark blue, purple are harder. The areas in the nose and the tail are very tricky. My only suggestion is to use as few cuts in the glass as possible. DEpending on how talented glasser uou are will deterimne how well you pull that off/ Good luck
gracias!! thanks. so what im getting out of this, is by using the same thing, just not as much, ill get a translucent feel to it. that would be great. Well would light orange be an easy color. i understand yellow is easiest, but im not sure how great yellow can actually look, while ive seen light orange tints and they look rad. as for where to buy it. what is the specific name im looking for? opaques? or pigments?..bc i noticed on the fiberglass supply website they are listed as pigments. is pigments like the main catagory that opaques are in? thanks for all the help, im stoked about trying a resin tint. im trying to talk a friend into letting me try it on his board, whihc i most likely will end p doing. thanks dj
when doing a tint top and bottom, is it true that you can’t “baste” the laps? what’s the best way to lam a logo with the tinted side?
good question…besides the question he just asked, what would u do with ur logo?? dj
You can baste the laps…use clear resin. If its a clean job you won’t have to baste.Logos can be applied over the cured glass job by mixing a small amount of resin and squeegeeing it on neatly.Let it cure and hotcoat as normal.Be real careful when sanding…you can burn into the logo. However if you trim the paper neatly and use a light tint you can do the logo just as you would on a clear board.
ahhh awesome. is a light orange an easy color to do. bc thats what i want to try. dj
orange is a good color. my first color i used was yellow. it came out real nice. i also tried a darker shade of green. it showed every little sanding mark from the blank. also, remember to strain your resin after adding the pigment.
pigments, tints…all the same stuff. Just call up either of those two places and ask them what you want to do and they’ll get you the right stuff. Call Fiberglass hawaii in Santa cruz and ask for Jessie, never seen her, but she has the absolute cutest voice in the world!!!
haha, jessie huh. ok ill give em a call. as for straining them , ive heard this, but what should i strain them with? will my moms medal cooking strainer work? haha. im not sure what im gonna need to strain it. thanks for all the input fellas, im hoping orange isnt very tough. it would be smart to try yellow first, but i dont care and im up for the challenge. I thought of orange bc, have any of u guys seen the surfer mag edition , thats the big collector size one. the dude on the fronts about to get pitted riding a sweet orange tinted fish. i just think it looks great. dj
Use a medium mesh cone shaped cup strainers. You can get them from paint stores or Fiberglass suppliers. You can make a nice orange using primarily yellow with a bit of red added.Test color ratio on a piece of scrap foam or something white like your Mom’s washing machine.Make sure you put a coat of wax on the washing machine so you can peel the resin off. R.B.
haha ok, so im using those same white kkk hat looking cone things ive used befor haha. yeah the washer machine, i can hear the screams now. fiberglass supply sells an orange pigment, i think i just might go with that, and add some yellow if its to dark, thanks again dj
The cone things suck to strain your resin. Home Depot sells these paint strainer bags that work much better. They have an elastic top so you can stretch it over your bucket. You then pour the resin in and then lift off the strainer from the bucket. Best thing of all is the cost about 60 cents!
Diversified Products 619-464-4111 in San Diego. they sell all sorts of pigments, all colors and best of all they are liquids so no blobs. Buy all the primary colors and just mix your own colors, don’t forget white. -Jay
thanks for the input, im doing a orange tints on a friends board, prob soemtime this week… that is if its not to cold. how many cc’s do u think i need it the temp is 60 degrees? dj
i’d go with a 1% mix. that should give you plenty of time, especially with a tint. let us know how it comes out…good luck
hmmm 1% of catalyst… im not quite the math man. im gonna say thats like 15 cc’s. i think its 10 cc’s but wouldnt i wnat to go with 15 since its cold, id hate to have to wait forever to get it to gell. but its def safer to go lower. i think ill go 15 though. as thats what i shoot it off at 80 degrees, and it gives me an extra 2 minutes after im done. ill def let u know. maybe even try to post a picture, which i have to elarn to do on this site. took me long enought to learn it on surfermag. ill let u know though, ill be doing it sometime next week, bc i ordered the pigment today, so itll be in in prob a week. my friends totally siked, and is glad to let me try something new on his board. i think ill do fine. dj
