A Joel Tudor single fin egg (very relaxed rocker) has a fully vee’d bottom. It’s softened from the apex of the nose rocker forward. The concaves run from that apex all the way to about 9 inches from the tail. They are very subtle in the forward and mid section of the board and increase to about and 1/8" deep under foot then gradually disappear into the tail section. So yes It’s being done.
I recently made a single as you are describing: 7’0"x20"x2-3/4", roundtail. Flat at entry with progressively deepening double concaves with a vee exiting out the back behind the fin.
The guy just called me today and said it works really well. The speed it carried and the holding power off the bottom turn was notable. He got good waves at a point break in Santa Barbara, where the guys were kicking out and running back up the beach. He said he was getting some of the longest rides as well. He is a well-travelled, and competent surfer.
Here is a picture of his board, sorry I don’t have any shape detail shots or any footage of the board in action. He is running a Greenough Stage 3 in it now, but I will be getting a Skip Frye flex fin to him soon. Curious to see what the change will be in performance. HTH.
Thank you LeeDD, Halcylon, and PlusOneShaper for all the advice/input on this design. My original concern was riding something with the single to double concave with a single fin would want you to pull on the rail more so than straight Vee and that this would not be optimum for a single fin.
But it sounds like from the advice that this would not be the case.
Also I’m thinking about dropping the tail rocker a touch on this design.
I know that I defiantly want the best configuration for both riding it as a 2+1 and as just the single.
Something for the summertime point break swells.
Thanks again guys, also HTH I like the outline and the resin tint on that board looks Great !
