I like narrow tails.
You'll be better off with a more complete fin quiver. You really can't have too many fins. A narrow tipped 10" flex might be worth adding to the stash.
My experiences with 'too small' fins is that everything is OK until it isn't. Your experience sounds exactly the same as mine. The trick is finding a single fin that will hold in on the late steeps without being too stiff in everything else.
If all else fails, it isn't too late to install some sidebite boxes and rail fins.

well said !
and good rocker and foil and modern bottoms
modern single fins should be just THAT !
leave the 1970s 'dungers' [THANKS , Speedneedle !] back where they belong . I have had HEAPS over the years , and one by one got rid of them ALL ...or stripped and reshaped the ones with half-decent rocker [few!] into something more rideable / enjoyable !
What was it Wayne Lynch said , again ? [and HE should know , if ANYBODY does !! ...
he said ..... ' man , they were shit then , they are shit now " [why he refuses to do old school rails , blanks , and [lack of] rocker ]
....check out some of the low performance boards the poor guy had to ride , in the movies 'Evolution', and 'Sea Of Joy' sometime , if you doubt me] .... It was only because he was [IS STILL !] such a brilliant surfer , that he got them places on the wave WE could only fantasise about !
cheers
