single-fin placement

I have just shaped a 7’6" retro board. I’m gonna put a single-fin on it. how far from the tail should i place it??

fin box or glass-on?

Put a long box in about 3" from the tail. That should give you the adjustment you’ll need.

I have my box placed 5" from the tail. I usually place a fin on the finished blank to get an idea where it would look good. Then I mark where the fin box will start from 1/2" back from that mark. So far they’ve fallen in the 5" range.

sorry guys - ment to say it is a glass on fin!! can anyone help!!??

I always liked my fin way back on singles. I always used my fin as far back as I could get it in the box. 2-3" from the tail. Then I shaped for Lewis Graves and he would use the same board with the fin at the front of the box. I guess I’m not being very helpful here, huh? I guess what I’m saying is, put it where it looks good to you.

Hi guys I’m in a similar situation at the moment, although, I think I might have screwed it. My retro board is 7’4 and the fin I’ve made is a copy of a Greenough flex fin from an original board. The fin is huge maybe 14" tall of which on the original was glassed on. However , I have used a fin box set 8" from the sharp pin tail, so that the trailing edge lines up with the end of the board. Will the board be way to loose?? and if I have made a boo boo is there a way out?? (I guess I could glass it on)? Oh, and the only measurement I forgot to take was the fin position, Doh!! Cheers Peaman
