Single Fin Project

I started a retro single fin style board and about to shape the bottom, looking for suggestions on what would be a good bottom contour?  I’ve shaped a few shortboards with concaves but I don’t think that is the proper bottom shape for a fuller single fin.  Maybe flat to v?

Specs are 7’ x 21 x 2 7/8

Also where should I place the fin maybe 7-8 inchs from the tail? I’m planning on doing a glassed on fin so no changing it once it’s on!  Thanks.

Post a pic of your outline.

It will make a huge difference.

Here is a pic out the outline I’m going with.

I have done a few boards with a relatively similar template and have found i like to run either a slight single or flat with v out the back.

As far as a fin goes- i would suggest using a box. Unless you got a dialed in design, fin choice and placement could make or break the board.

Glass on looks better but its gonna be hanging on the wall if its a dog with your fin choice.

Id start with a GG 4a template around 7 inch. - never lets me down.

Thanks! I think I’ll go with flat to v and I got an extra 10.5 fins unlimited box that will work great.

Flat to vee is pretty classic. Sometimes I’ll run a slight concave through to that vee. Box is great while you’re getting your head around the single. I ended up riding my singles with fins really far forward compared to most and digging that…

Odd for some reason when I click on the template link, I get an access denied?

Max - that template link is just some ( i find really annoying) link thing that gives you a deffinition of basic surfing terms - its just going to tell you what template means.

Here is a link to the fin if thats what you thought it was http://www.trueames.com/products/greenough-4-a-surf-fin

Cool, thanks!

Max, I general guideline to place the fin is to put the fin on the stringer and lay it down.  Move it fore or aft until about 1/3 of the fin is over the rail.  May have got that from Bill Thraikill.  Mike

Cool thanks for the tip Mike!
