Single Fin question

Hey all I’ve been lurkin for a while and found some great info here at the forum so I thought I’d ask a question

I recently bought an 8’6 takayama egg as my first board after riding a softboard for a couple of months

My first surf the board felt too tight so I moved the fin forward a touch and it now seems better and I have been able to pull off a few nice manouvers with it but I am wondering if a single fin will help me get a bit more speed

My understanding is that the stabilisers cause drag slowing the board down is this right?

Can you guys tell me if a single will make the board faster and is so what size/style of fin should I use?

Also how much stability will I lose by going to a single?

Thanks if you can help

Pete

Sounds like you need to take the side fins out, if you can, and just ride it as a single, and find out for yourself the differences. Have fun and try everything, till you find what you really like.

Yes I will but my rear fin is only about 4 1/2 inches so I think it would be too small on its own so I was lookin for suggestions as to what size rear fin I should try

Thanks

Is your egg an epoxy flo egg, or do you have the Takayama ‘egg’ fiberglass with the duck hatching lam on it? Or is it the fiberglass flo egg?

Either way, my experience with fibreglass Takayama eggs is that they are more top to bottom trim-oriented boards, and don’t do hairpin redirections or vertical surfing too well. Think 70s style shortboard.

For an 8’6" try using a 8.0 Takayama Finger Fin, a wide based flex fin with a lot of sweep. I believe that is the recommended single fin setup for you board size.

I would keep it single fin. Thruster setup will give it more drive off the tail. But think about it: it’s an egg!

Thanks sidestreet

its a fiberglass taky egg with the duck hatchin on it

I was out in small surf today and was pretty happy with how I could move it around I managed a couple of floaters and it was super stable on top of the foam and a couple of re-entry’s not quite vertical but fun all the same

Thanks for the advice on the fin size I’ll have to try one out

Pete,

If your side fins are toed in you will have significant drag. You might want to browse through the recent “Thick Fin vs. Thin Fin” thread. It should give you some insight into fin function.

Howzit RePete,

Just for fun, why don’t you try it with just the small center fin. As long as the waves aren’t too steep or fast breaking, it’ll work better than you think, and you might just gain a deeper understanding of what your fins are doing.
