i want to shape my own single fin egg and there are alot of things that i dont know. 1. is it better to have a domey deck or to flatten it out? 2. would a flex fin be advisible? 3. is there any sort of bottom concaves or vee that would make it ride better? if anyone could help it would be much appreciated.

I’m planning on shaping an egg also. Here are the dimensions I’ve been tossing around in my head…7’0", nose-16", width-21", tail-14 1/2"(round pin), thickness-2 1/2". It’s basically a scaled down version of a 9’0" longboard that I’m riding that I really like. I’ve been trying to keep things as simple as possible lately with good results. I plan on using a basic flat to vee bottom. Soft low rails up front to middle, with the edge hardening in the last two feet. As for a domed or flat deck, thats pretty much up to you. Some like the sensitivity that comes along with a thinner rail when the deck is domed, while others like the forgiveness of a flat deck.

It depends a lot on what you want it to feel like when you ride it and the waves you surf. If you are coming from a standard thruster background and want it to perform like your old boards in a variety of conditions, stay with the flat deck, 60/40 rails with a tucked edge, flat bottom with a little roll or v through the fin. You can soup up the v with concaves if you’d like. Put in a box so you can try all kinds of fins to find what works or feels the best. If you surf clean point breaks or lined-up reefs you might want to try a hull. Go up to 23 inches wide with the wide point up 3 inches from the middle. Round to rounded square tail. Low rocker throughout. Now the hard part, 2.5 to 3 inches thick with a big dome on the deck to compensate for severely pinched rails. The bottom is bellied in the middle going to fairly flat behind the fin. Rail line is a flowing high to low. The foil is critical. It should have a paper thin tail; you’ll have to keep the deck dome through the tail to give you room for the fin box. Put the box up where it shouldn’t be (back of the box about 8-10 inches up from the tail!). Slap a 9 inch flexie fin in about 13 inches up from the tail and you’re off. Oh yeah, ya gotta glass it with Volan to get it to flex properly. If you go this route you ought to seek out a Paul Gross/Greg Liddle/Skip Fry egg to see their variations on the theme. Have fun!
