single fin rails and bottom contour

Hi,

I am about to shape a 6’1 single fin similar to the channel island MSF-1. I am going to put FCS side plugs in it so i have the option of riding it as a thruster. i am wondering if anyone has one/has seen one and could tell me what rails it has and how rolled the deck is.

Also, what is the best way to put double concaves into a board… i am thinking of putting a single to double concave with maybe a slight vee in the tail. Any advice about where to start the double concave and vee?

thanks

simon

Sounds like you’re tackling your first shape…

Rail thickness for your personal preference, your weight, the size waves you are riding…

You can make a ply or masonite curve, usually half the width of your board, with about a 1/4" depth, which you attach sandpaper to and sand the blank. Change grit of paper to finish sand.

Usually WPoint is the starting transition from single to double on a traditional single fin template.

thanks LeeDD,

i have only shaped one board before, this will be my second.

I am about 80kg and want the board for smallish waves- 1 foot to head high. I am thinking about trying to put a single to double concave and then a slight vee at the tail (probably a bit optimistic for my level!). What do people think about this? Any tips?

Hey Simon110180,

the thing about bottom contours are that more can go wrong as more complexity enters the picture. Granted, the board will work, however you will have a higher probability of making a truly well-riding board if you keep it simple, especially with a single.

First board would benefit from a flat to vee set-up. I know you are keen on trying stuff and this should always be true. The suggestion that you do a simple board first will give you a great baseline to work from and your designs and sense of function will actually develop quicker.

If you make vee, allow it to get progressively stronger (1/4" max using a straight edge, flat on one side of the vee) until you reach an area just ahead of the fin, then fade the vee out until it is just slight (say 1/8"), off the tail.

Spend a lot of time getting smooth lines looking from many different angles and lighting situations. Hint: if you can see a flaw, go after it…

Hi Simon, Good advice from LeeD and Plus one as usual. I just finished a 5’11" single. I took the template off of a 5’9" machado single. The board had what I call hard rails. 60/40 from the tail to 24 inches up. The deck was pretty flat. Almost a Bonzer bottom around the single fin. Single concave from the tip blending into the double concaves. Going from memory now because I’m posting from Alaska. I put slight double concave in mine by wrapping sand paper around a beer can(empty). I’d keep it simple. Have fun.
